Consider that the people who fall for populist rhetoric are often the people hurting the most. What are the leaders of Europe doing to address their grievances, besides dismissal, or asking the afflicted for endurance and tolerance, or shaming the afflicted for turning elsewhere for solutions? It is the poor governance of Europe by its establishment which have caused this mess. They prioritized their abstract vision of Europe over looking out for their electorate. Instead of seriously reassessing whether their vision for Europe is still relevant and desirable for the people of Europe, and whether their methods to realize this vision are appropriate, they have tried to contain the problem, resulting in a vacuum which has been exploited by populists. While I agree that it's important that we get along, I can't help but feel that this documentary is part of the containment effort and a diversion from the actual source of Europe's problems.

The diversity we have in our world today was grown over long periods of separation. Can diversity thrive in the highly connected and intertwined world liberals envision? Hardly. A more relevant question is: can it survive? It has become clear to me that multiculturalism was never the goal, but a necessary transition-state we are persuaded into tolerating on our trajectory towards mono-culture. Arguments for multiculturalism is just lubricant to ease the friction, or at best an effort to extract some value out of cultures before they fade.

Well, they suggested a solution: the introduction of the right to a home. Sounds very much like a simplistic populist solution rather than a serious attempt to address the issue at its core.

For over a century, the west, led by UK and US has gone around the world opening up markets and natural resources to exploitation of western companies under the flag of freedom and democracy, often using military force. If we close our boarders to China in fear of competition we should not be surprised if they call us hypocrites and adopt a similar strategy.
