They're all contaminated with toxic post-modernism? Yeah, my point is Jordan is using a very broad brush here.

  2. I sympathize to an extent with the idea that academia appears to be disproportionately critical and ungrateful of the society they find themselves in. On the one hand, I do feel that this is part of their job. They are supposed to look for flaws in and challenge the current system so that we can improve it. On the other hand, Steven Pinker has a point in that it is also possible to improve society by identifying the things we do well and do more of it. If I had to choose, I'd rather have an academia that is cynical, disruptive and inconvenient than one that is only reaffirming, flattering and self-serving. I don't have to choose though, so I guess finding a balance between the two is the best way.
