  2. ​ @JeffPar50  Mearsheimer's argument is that Russia sees the Ukraine issue as existential, meaning they will exhaust all options before letting Ukraine become a NATO member or US military base. This is not only the perspective of Putin, but of the entire Russian elite. So the closer Ukraine is to victory, the closer Russia is to fire the first nuke. Why would they dare apply nuclear weapons? Because Ukraine does not have nuclear weapons, and they don't believe that it is in the interest of other nuclear armed nations to expose themselves to existential risk by retaliating on Ukraine's behalf.
