Say they encourage Taiwan and Hong-Kong to seek independence, sponsoring militant groups. Say they succeed in replacing Putin's regime by one that is US friendly and anti-China sentiment grows over time. Say economic sanctions are applied, motivated by violation of human rights. Say US ramp up involvement in Tibet and challenge China's access to economically and strategically important minerals. Etc. Chinese commitment to avoiding war with US will for sure be tested.
