  8. I'm not an expert on these kind of things, but I can't see how you would build an atom accelerator. Certainly they must ionize the atom first in order to make it charged such that it may be accelerated using electromagnetic fields, and at that point it's not technically an atom, right?

  15. I was a bit bothered when they had docked to the space station during reentry and decided to thrust tangential to the center of gravity. In reality this would not cause acceleration in any particular direction except around its own center of gravity. But lo and behold, it fliest straight as an arrow, reentry is cancelled and space station is pushed right back into space.

  21. Mandos Aldmer The premise of my question was flawed. Ions are in fact atoms. Either I was taught wrong in elementary school or I just misunderstood. It's good that I finally corrected this misconception. A proton is a fermion and can be regarded as a H+ atom, so it's possible to accelerate atoms, however not while it's neutrally charged, as both you and I pointed out.

A common issue is that your pitch control surfaces are behind the center of mass, therefore requiring the back of the plane to drop in order to get lift, but since it's on the ground this won't happen. Simplest solution in this case is usually to just keep accelerating to the end of the runway. Other solutions are to either add control surfaces onto the front part of the plane or adjust landing gears such that the plane points slightly upwards.

  43. So, I built this space station and successfully docked a probe to one of the docking ports, but when I tried to dock a second probe to the station the damn port won't open. I hit it right in the center like 5 times but the magnets never kick in and it just bounces off the port... ...turns out I equipped the station with two different ports. I realigned my probe to a corresponding port and succeeded on first attempt. X(

  50. Question: I was trying to make a perfectly circular orbit around Kerbal at 100,000 m altitude. As I was approaching the number for both "Ap" and "Pe" it started to behave a bit wierd. It seems as though "Ap" and "Pe" were drifting (see "Apsidal precession"). What's behind this phenomenon? Is it a matter of rounding errors or some kind of tidal effect due to lunar influense? I mean, the phenomenon does seem to disappear at higher excentricity.

  54. As I was floating in orbit, looking down on the surface of Duna, a sad memory got to me: "Spore". It was such an ambitious game concept with great potential, and yet somehow Maxis manages to produce a game that stops being interesting once you turn 7. It offered no realism, no depth to explore, and no challenge. If the game is ever remade, I wish the developers of KSP get on the job, because it seem like they're likely to get it done, and done right.

  59. I was trying to dock a fuel tank onto a large space station. Unfortunately I ran out of RCS, so I had to dock the large space station unto the fuel tank instead haha! It was quite tricky but it worked out eventually.

  63. My 2nd mission: Landed Minimus, orbited Mun, ran out of fuel with periapsis 400,000 km above Kerbin. Forced it down to 180,000 km by having Jebediah go EVA and push on the shuttle using his rcs pack. With fuel, electricity & Jebediah all exhausted, I improvised a rescue vehicle that could grapple the shuttle (no docking ports) and escort it down to Kerbin atmosphere. At that point I couldn't care less about the sci.p. The satisfaction of watching it land safely on Kerbin was undescribable.

  67. I played the demo, and it's fucking cruel haha. I could only afford medicine for one family member, so I had to choose which one I liked more. Completed the game though without any family member dying, but this was the second time. The first time I played they all died and I went bankrupt.
