I'm not an expert on these kind of things, but I can't see how you would build an atom accelerator. Certainly they must ionize the atom first in order to make it charged such that it may be accelerated using electromagnetic fields, and at that point it's not technically an atom, right?

Piñata Oblongata The source of my confusion was that I was under the impression that ion and atom are mutually exclusive concepts. But after browsing definitions of ion it is clear that ion is a subset of atom. (Anion ∪ Cation) ⊆ Ion ⊆ Atom

Mandos Aldmer The premise of my question was flawed. Ions are in fact atoms. Either I was taught wrong in elementary school or I just misunderstood. It's good that I finally corrected this misconception. A proton is a fermion and can be regarded as a H+ atom, so it's possible to accelerate atoms, however not while it's neutrally charged, as both you and I pointed out.
