The Oppenheimer clip is from 1965 and he's describing his reaction to the Trinity nuclear bomb test in 1945. Bhagavad Gita concerns prince Arjuna's doubts before a war of succession against an army which includes friends, cousins and teachers. Prince Arjuna is persuaded by the god Vishnu that war is his fate, which is for Vishnu to decide. What did Oppenheimer find relevant in this story? He seems to have viewed the bomb as Vishnu and himself as Arjuna: (1) he found himself in a war of succession (who will determine the new world order?); (2) the war troubled him, because (in his view) his enemy is also his kin; (3) the terror and awe invoked in him by the Trinity test made him conclude that the world is on an inevitable trajectory. With or without his contribution, the technology of nuclear weapons was inevitable, and it was here to destroy, so he may as well carry out his role. http://blog.nuclearsecrecy.com/2014/05/23/oppenheimer-gita/
