War has never been the same before either. No war, at least none that was actually a war and not just some country spanking another one left and right, was ever like the one before. Even if it was just 10 years or so between them. Now imagine what it must be like if the last "real" war was like 50 years ago. Between WW1 and WW2 there were almost exactly 20 years, and it was a totally different beast. Now imagine 50 years. It's actually a miracle that we even see people using assault rifles anymore.

@boldtaa Well, the WW1 cavalry soon realized that the days of the cavalry are numbered in the trench warfare with machine guns mowing them down. Cavalry after 1914 meant "highly mobile infantry", little more. WW1 was a VERY different best from anything that came before. then again, it was also the first "big" war between superpowers in a long time (if I'm not mistaken, the last war before that between large countries was the Prussian-French war in 1870/71). I would also not classify Vietnam as a "classic" war. The last "normal" war before this one was probably even Korea. Vietnam was already an asymmetric war without a front line. There was not really a "true" frontline, the VC was everywhere, behind American lines and the battle was more often than not not a battle in the common sense but Americans going out into villages and trying to ferret out some VC bases. This was maybe the first real asymmetric war in the sense that both sides didn't have the same goal. The Americans had as their victory condition that they win. The VC and North Vietnam had as their victory condition that the Americans lose. You cannot win a war against an enemy that does not care what happens to him as long as you lose. There is no victory possible. Unless you have the same goal, and then the result is mutual annihilation. And again nobody wins.

"Russia, get out of Eastern Europe, to the 2014 borders!" is more what's being yelled now. And hope we don't dial it back to the 1918 border, with some corrections concerning Ukraine.

I'm upset that they send these young people to die without any military training. They could as well have shot them right in the barracks and save them the trip to the meat grinder.

0:25 is such a typical display of a lack of training. These 3 kids did not have to die if they had even a few weeks of proper military training. They are WAY, WAY too close to each other, no spacing, no distance, they're essentially begging to be taken out by a grenade. Russia, if you can't train your people, stop sending them into a war. This is irresponsible how you're wasting the lives of your young people! Also, they obviously have no idea how to act in case of a drone attack.

@boldtaa I tend to disagree, Vietnam was a very different war in many aspects. First, as you have already identified, it was the first televised war. The first war that you could literally see at home. It was also very different in the way it was fought. The age of the average soldier was way lower than in WW2. And as stated before, it was not a "normal" war, with front lines and everything else we were used to from WW2.

@LarsRyeJeppesen But they have that nice, bright target cross on their roof...
