That would make sense for an omnipotent, omniscient being. Who with these qualities would want to spend eternity with simple minded, easily duped dimwits?

@fred_derf Pretty much this, yes. If there really was a god, he'd probably use this kind of tool of reverse psychology to see who would be worthy of spending eternity with him. Who'd want to spend eternity with boring yes-men?

@aks799 Sure, but whoever wrote the book isn't exactly a good storyteller. Not only is the alleged protagonist an unlikable Mary Sue, he also gets the message twisted to the point of basically telling the opposite of what he wants to say.
