In a visualizing manner, I believe I understand what you say. The Western philosophy is limited in its scope. I believe this has to do with Christianity. On the whole I much prefer Buddhism, Zen, and the Hindu religion with its deeper understanding or metaphysics of reincarnation and gods, etc.
The thing with, as you say, the Anglo-Saxon way of thinking, is that, though Science can and does prepare for most all possibilities of what can go wrong, Stockton himself could not envision all the variables that could lead to disaster, like the carbon-based hull, which from what I heard from somewhere, is very strong, but may not hold up due to other factors that go into the making of carbon-based things. Glue, for instance, was mentioned.
In other words, "best laid plans of mice and men" applies here. Still so awful to think lives were list due to the vision of one person being so short'sighted after all. Done in by "the smallest things", which was a line in the old version of War of the Worlds. In that case, of course, germs killed the aliens.
