  6. Small thing, but through your work there is a consistent subtext of respecting ones car and enjoying the ride. We live in these you tube and performance spec driven times where something is the best and everything else rubbish, for ten minutes until something else is better, and where people get more pleasure slagging than actually enjoying and driving..you drive some exotic machines, and some fairly approachable ones, cars personalized, maybe that’s better term than modified, and all enjoyed by their owners. That’s the cool aspect..the unwritten competition of things having to be the best and it being some entitlement thing..that’s inevitable a losing proposition ..you look for the best in everything you drive, and it’s less about something better than something else, and when you are on the track it’s about improving, not so much beating someone..everyone wins by driving well..maybe off topic, but i think the sensibility is a common thread across all your stuff

Your reviews are truly fine stuff..too many car reviewers do their stuff in relative terms..”this is better, worse” etc..whereas you have a knack for clinically finding what’s to appreciate..I’d say the world has loads of good cars these days..it’s so much down to taste, taste in driving style and what turns one on..I sense it suits your style. Screw haters, fan boys whatever. We had a deposit on one and ultimately passed..but not because the car is pooch. Moreover I understand many design elements suggest future tuning will come if not via TRD, via aftermarket..I think it’s a tie to the old supra if only in that aspect. More than other comparably priced cars, this one lends itself to tuning..as is, box stock: you confirm it’s fun and looks the part too..well done..you are the reviewmeister...

On the track one expects and is ready for stuff to happen, but the unexpected just driving around stuff is what leaves the mental scars...those biffs are the ones that shake one up big time. Indeed..from my very first 68 beetle..no regrets there..the only ones I ended up regretting: a Chevy Blazer, the only American car we ever owned..back in 74..thru corporate deal thinking would be cool yet was junk that sucked gas..one we stepped back from and regret: a vintage jag about the same time..would have sucked money but been fun..our lesson: don’t buy anything restored or tuned by anyone else..know the provenance..

Needed saying..sadly..it’s not important to me:you do good stuff and it doesn’t matter the rest...society seems to allocate people into tribes and at the end this is about cars, as portrayed thru the personality of the presenter ...gay etc isn’t part of the equation..cycling and cars have this macho guy thing: “the wife” etc...that denigrates entire groups: women, aging....in favour of some juvenile image...wtf, it’s about enjoying cars, learning. Do we research authors and toss books by those we find to be gay, female etc? Thankyou for gently curry thru the crap...you do good shit, and I can imagine having coffee enjoying a ride with you..and I don’t need qualify that with despite being older, heterosexual or whatever..that’s bullshit and unnecessary.   31. I’ve driven the 4wd and felt bit dead...you clearly had fun..so I’d say the change was full success. It’s personal taste and kinda cool it’s not obvious to look at..need more cars that are less advertising and more done by and for the driver

Our roads are fraught w construction in summer..and now, trailer traffic...we used to really enjoy overnight from Calgary to Minnesota overnight..beck then was Volvo turbo which was good for it’s time...we drove near 100 and in a few years of it only have one incident in dark with loose cow..my wife was driving, 2am..she didn’t blink, but simply spun the car out of trouble.

One of you most informative, and broadly useful pieces period...well done dude...one thought, that vs stage 3, it’s a place where some might wish to revisit goals and take that stage 3 cash, buy into a spec race car....that spec miata for example or other SCCA classes. It takes a trailer, some more cash yes, but if ones goals become competition door to door, maybe a way to consider. I really like your approach to the m3 ...it’s more fun to set up towards track days, than simply add mega power and body kits to look hot at the drive in...that’s fun too, but I prefer your usage of the car. Sure envy the access to properrace tune shops....we have...zero....and thanks for sharing your set up....you aren’t pitting it out as this being the only way, best way, all else is wrong, rather just a footnote that we can all calibrate off

Jacob Sandor McNamara hey guys..ease up..Tom does great stuff and is very good at portraying the cars he drives..I am truly sorry to have opened a can of worms..I love the brand, from the pre ww2 thru early GP cars..some of the crazy design exercises..and the small yet perfectly formed cars of late 50s thru 70..was a car I wanted..a GTA..my observation was not based on ownership, but I have driven them..and love the new intro to NAmerica..but where we live it’s rather more than an annoyance to have issues..my wife had problems with her M3 and first within a week of purchase faced a recall, then a tranny problem necessitating a flatbed to Kelowna some 4 hours away...a week to reprogram, test..then three weeks for part to come from ZF..all nicely covered and with a loaner X3m..but fact remains was a major pain vs an inconvenience if we lived in a big city..so for small makers without dealer footprints, who may also be protective of their service and warranty operations and not like other shops seeing into a problem..well..that’s where I am coming from..Alfa is great, distinctive, handle so well..car for car they are sweet..but at least in Canada they don’t have a great reputation, however unfounded that may be..nor a dealer spread...that said, I’d definitely take a shot on one over many other cars at same or more money- jaguar..etc...heck I wish them well in their F1 efforts.they need all the help they can get...but whatever, let’s not hijack Toms good work..this is his living and he’s one of not many honest influencers going..we support him on Patreon and I’d encourage others to jump on....

Tedward I didn’t say I was any good at it either...ha ha...I think manual and the feel of accomplishment gives a measure of satisfaction that those never learning don’t have and hence their car experience tends to measurement by statistics, price tag and you tube review..knowing that I can drive, and Cathy the same gives us a smug feeling....that said she had her dct M cars and loved em...I’ve never drunk the dct koolaid just because I enjoy the expereince vs ultimate speed..I know dct is faster..but not always more fun

I related to every part of this..carreer long investment banking and the people who actually came to believe they were important to the world...hated retiring , but because I felt need to be engaged, but not that I needed the high end watch and suit..project cars were learning experiences..there was never a best ever simply putting myself out there and taking the risk of making something my own way however that might play out..too often people need be seen as pro or never start. In 66..but huge difference between having fun in sun and snow and trying to get along a frozen icy highway w crosswinds in -40 ..that lonely and scary white knuckle stuff..btw, in Calgary years ago, guy drove his ferrari all winter. Love it

Tedward it’s more to the toy end of things..for backcountry all year beating on a vehicle it’s hard to top either a taco or else anything costing $5k or under that you never wash and carry a mountain bike in back in case it breaks down. Cathy has fibromyalgia and she spent ten years as wildlife photographer in tacos and FJ...it’s not the same I know but when chosen properly and used as tool for the job, trucks offer a lot...kinda interested to see the reincarnation of land rover that’s called a Gladiator. We drive past a Jeep dealer on way to town most days and must admit they have a nice look..

Fj was her weapon of choice she was backcountrywildlife photographerbut w fibromyalgia so couldn’t hike wher kit in backcountry. Very remote, verygnarly. Where possible we did coilovers, stuff sidewall tires..brake pads..always tires on OEM are crap

Tedward most toyota -roducts if not most Japanese have soft sidewall cheap tires that give BarcaLounger ride supposedly, but at compromise of any handling..not just in turns, but stability on pebbles, iced ruts..car grabs and wanders...I get on my rant when even mall crawlers are actually unsafe in varied conditions. People assume summer condition driving will be the same at any time of year or weather..and blithely point and shoot their cars expecting too be good..”I have a 4wd so am fine”. Doh.

Tedward I knew you had flown..am one who thinks flying, high performance DH skiing, descending on a road bicycle..all give give us a feel that both helps with driving at speed, and with enjoyment. An icy DH course on edges and feeling that an error would have consequences, ditto a bike crash...
