@VeritasEtAequitas Fighter jets? What are you on about. We're talking about door bell cameras here. There's no reason they can't supply them with a firmware API that would allow them to be used with third-party open sourced software. And no, that won't be a threat to national security. Any company not happy with this should make sure their cameras aren't reliant on a service they may decide to stop providing in the future.

This goes well beyond cars, should apply to computers, phones, TVs, washing machines, toasters, and anything else people own which collects data on them.

@dombo813 No, we need a change in the law. Any attempt to charge you to use features you have already paid for and own should be seen for what it is, extortion.

Sorry mate, but if service staff are only going to do their job correctly when they know they have to in order to receive a tip, then they don't deserve one, it's as simple as that. In that case, they're already being paid what they're worth.

Maybe it's not a design issue. Maybe you're not holding it the right way.

Surely this would come under the moniker of "Bait and switch"?

5:16 EU should respond with "Yes, we will compensate both people that this happens to."

Technically, it's fraud, because it's an attempt to prevent the customer from enjoying their warranty.

Tipping: An economic model which allows some businesses to charge more for their products and services than they advertise, but not others.

Putting a warrant void sticker on a product should be considered fraud. However, I would think the placement of this sticker is probably down to an error in manufacturing.

Man, that cat is fast.

It's very simple people. If you have bespoke software, own the source code.

Could you imagine how fast MicroSoft would get dragged into court if they enforced a "All software must be purchased though us, and we get a 30 percent cut" policy?
1
Louis, you should sell merch that has a picture of a wallet, in the apple rainbow colours, with a bite taken out of it.

2:38 You skipped the most important message: "Migrate to self hosted ASAP."

Not sure what the solution to this is, but whatever it is, it needs to be global. There's no point having laws in the US protecting US citizens from the issues raised here if there are no laws protecting non-US citizens making the same purchases.

Orwell was wrong, Big Brother was not the government.

Software as a service was bad enough, but hardware as a service, hardware that you actually own, how is that even legal. I own it, I'll do what ever I want with it.
1
Of course you can expect them to have that server running forever. That's what you paid them for when you bought their product. They chose to make it reliant on the server, so they chose to be responsible for supplying that service.

It never was.
