Half life means it's expended half of its radioactivity in that time. It's still half again as radioactive as it ever was after that though. It's kind of like the question how long does it take a bear to get out of his cave if he walks halfway out every day? The answer is he never makes it out. It's a half, then a half of that half, etc.

A slab avalanche sounds plausible to me. The real question is why couldn't they find anything better to do than hike in the Russian wilderness in the winter? That's high on my list of things to avoid in life personally.

Well, they do like their vodka in Russia and that alone explains an awful lot.

@paavobergmann4920 if it's radioactive then it's radioactive. Lower doses are marginally better than higher doses are though.

@paavobergmann4920 lower intensity just means it takes that much longer to affect you. So it is just a question of time. Instead of just an hour to soak up lethal rads it takes 16. The problem with ionizing radiation is that it is cumulative.
