@piked86 what do you mean Intel never saw Zen coming? Intel engineers created Zen. When AMD was on the ropes Intel lent AMD engineers. The last thing Intel wants is to be labeled a monopoly. Intel needs AMD.

@piked86 Intel is still selling more than half the processors sold now. So they haven't lost that yet.

We don't use x86 today. It's there still, but it's not what we use. x86 is 32 bits. Today we use 64 bits. That's not x86. It's actually called AMD64. Intel has a cross licensing agreement with AMD to use it. I think just the first part of the boot cycle is still x86? But once the system is bootstrapped it runs in 64 bit mode.

If I was buying a CPU today I wouldn't buy Intel. But things change. Intel will be on top again soon. It goes back and forth.

Perhaps you don't know this but we use AMD64 today. Even on Intel.

@dmac7128 I know x86 is still there. It's just not used much these days. I remember when I stopped using x86 and it was a while ago. x86 is 32 bit. Today we use 64 bit. I think 64 bit has x86 in it? The op codes. But x64 is extended x86. So we really don't need x86 anymore. But as I understand it the CPU starts up in x86 mode? That's nothing I'm familiar with so I don't really know.

@JMurph2015 so, you think Intel would want to see AMD fail? You don't see any problems for Intel if that happened? Who really worries about anti-trust anyways, right?

The country does welcome immigrants. We just don't want illegals. There is a difference. Anyone that wants to come has to come on our terms. This isn't a free for all.

@maksimfedoryak the USA has the most generous immigration policy in the world. We admit more legal immigrants than any other country. 641,100 in 2022 which is 119,900 more than the next country. Just that difference would almost land us in the top 10 again.

@tracyrreed I don't think x86 still being in chips today is a big deal. There's a whole minux computer running in modern CPUs today. It does housekeeping tasks and isn't user accessible.

@foobarf8766 I never heard of 'r' functions. I haven't done any assembly programing in a long time now. But when I did it was x86.

@Roxor128 I didn't have a PC before 80386, So for me the rest of that never existed. In my world x86 was always 32 bits. So there.
