@Guishan_Lingyou I was surprised it worked as well as it did. What I found surprising though was how much pulling up I was doing as opposed to pushing down. But if you think about it then it makes sense. Because the whole goal is dirt up and out of the hole. Sure you're going down but the soil removed has to come up. I found that helping it up helped a lot.

I've used an auger to plant bulbs too. It's the tool for the task. But I imagine a lot is down to the soil you have. Rocks I suppose would be bad. We don't have that problem here.

Ground augers are legit. I've never tried anything larger in diameter than 3 inches with a hand drill though. You want to go slow speed and keep the bit free. Don't let the bit thread into the ground. Keep it scraping and clearing the dirt out of the hole. Being as you're not going to break through to the other side you have to use a different strategy than say drilling wood. I don't have any rocks to contend with here either. I imagine hitting a rock with one of those drills is pretty bad.
