If you need a large diameter hole in thin sheet step bits are handy. It is either that or knock out hole punches. Large twist drill bits into thin sheets can be dangerous.

The Klein failed the tests early and was eliminated.

I like step bits for thin sheet. Once you go over the thickness of the steps step drills perform poorly then.

Step drills are great for making large holes in thin material but they can suck at piercing anything. So a pilot hole is a big help.

If you run the bit the right speed they can last. High speed steel machining mild steel you do not want to exceed a surface speed of 100 feet per minute. You can calculate that using this formula SFPM = (PI X dia X RPM) / 12 So when you get up over a half of an inch you have to turn the tool pretty slowly.

The problem with bed frame is it composed of particles of varying hardness. Stuff just is not refined very well. So bed frame can be both hard and tough at the same time. Which ends up being hard and tough on tools.

DeWalt is a subsidiary of Black and Decker. Milwaukee patented using lithium ion batteries in cordless tools. Which is a total scumbag move. Being as Milwaukee did not invent lithium ion batteries or cordless tools. They're just patent trolls.
