Craftsman is a brand they don't really make anything. They put their branding on tools others make.

@teamdada2194 Craftsman has had some of the best manufacturers make tools for them. So blanket statements such as yours are ludicrous.

Some Snap-On dealers can be difficult themselves. If you're a regular then you can expect good treatment. If not it's a crap shoot what they're going to do for you then. The dice are loaded against you too.

If you want calipers just buy Mitutoyos. But be warned there's a lot of counterfeit knocks offs around. So just buy from an authorized dealer. You'll know you have a real one if the battery lasts for 5 years. If it don't it's a fake. Cheap calipers can be OK but you'll be changing the batteries in them constantly.

A lot of tools don't even come lubed right from the factory. I've found that putting decent grease into a ratchet turns even crappy ones into premium feeling tools. If it has really tinny clicks it needs to be lubed.

I know that ratchets are not breaker bars. If a fastener is really stuck I'm not going to try to loosen it up with a ratchet. Once it's loose I'll use a ratchet then.

If a Gilmour ever leaks they'll give you a new one. I have a few and they're pretty good. They're not cheap though.

Case Construction King is the best. Just don't get the AC option. It always leaks. Although maybe they've fixed that now?

Snap-On ratchets and wrenches are the industry standard. Some of their other tools you can likely do better.

@deedle6073 not exactly like new. Snap-On tools you buy second hand have no warranty. It's only for the lifetime of the original purchaser, not eternity.
1
@harpintn it is still improper to say that Craftsman has made anything. It is difficult to know who made what though.

@teamdada2194 where are we going? The Craftsman drive tested here today did OK. Technology advances on a broad front. In this day and age it isn't that challenging to manufacture quality tools. The methods and processes are all well known now. The real advantage lies in the logistics of operations. Existing in an environment conducive to productivity. While anyone can do it only a select few can do it profitably.

Used properly tools don't tend to break. If you break stuff or wear it out then you should repair or replace it. Otherwise you're just a burden on society. Unless it is a legitimate manufacturing defect. But in my experience that happening is rare.

@aaronthomas6155 you'd think the tool could handle that. Perhaps MAC doesn't make the best 1/4" ratchet drives? If I had a tool fail multiple times on me I'd be looking for some other tool. It could just be a maintenance issue though? You'll see Oil Daily stamped on every Snap-On ratchet drive.

@aaronthomas6155 stripped out on the first time is about as bad as it gets. I was never a fan of MAC tools. I have some MAC tools and I'm not impressed. Icon seems pretty decent for what it is. They're basically budget knock offs. Like Snap-On but don't want to pay the high price? Have we got tools for you!

Chrome protects metal and cleans up easily. Which is why it is chosen as a tool finish. Personally I don't understand soft handled tools. If it's really killing you then wear gloves or something. That's gained in popularity over time. There's all kinds of mechanic's gloves on the market these days. I wear work gloves when I'm using landscaping tools myself.

@salvatore6539 I don't wear gloves when I want dexterity. So I don't own any mechanic's gloves. I cannot speak for what others do either. I've heard all the talk about dirty oil causing cancer. Mechanic's tan is kinda nasty too I suppose. Still, I'm of the mind that sometimes sacrifices need to be made.
