Heavy wool socks are nice. Heavy wool socks over liner socks are much nicer though. The best liner socks are made out of silk. But there's polypropylene liners made today that are almost as good. Silk liners are absolutely divine. You'll think you just stepped into a little slice of heaven with them on. You can find liner socks wherever fine sporting goods are sold. They're for hunting and camping. But life's quite an adventure regardless. Silk is a base layer.

If you need the performance wool alone doesn't cut it. You need a base layer of silk under the wool. The silk wicks moisture away. Then you can be soaked and still relatively comfortable. It's essentially magic.

@tearosy how are you allergic to wool? Wool is just sheep hair. If you're not used to it wool can be itchy and scratchy. That doesn't mean you're allergic to it though. It just means you're hypersensitive. That goes away in time after you're acclimated to wearing wool. There are different kinds of wool too. Some is very soft. There's even angora wool but that's from rabbits. There's cashmere too.

That's weird. Here they wear bootie coverings. Blue ones.

Yeah puttees replace tall boots. Tall boots are expensive and difficult to manufacture. So soldiers are issued mid length boots and putties. The puttie gives the added support and protection of a tall boot at a fraction of the investment. But it really is a stopgap measure and just kicking the can down the road. Because in the end all of that wrapping and unwrapping will exceed the labor of producing a proper boot in the first place. If there's a way on though it's desperate times.

@baylorsailor not much any of us can do about that.

Events of the past shape the present today. It all didn't happen yesterday. Knowing how it started gives perspective on where we're at now too. Those who don't know the past are doomed to repeat it.

@NZKiwi87 it's beyond quirky to be allergic to an ingredient of skin lotion. Next you'll be telling me there's people allergic to sunlight.

@RTT80 wool retains 80% of its insulative value soaking wet. That is nothing short of incredible. But you can make it even better with a base layer of silk under wool. Silk will wick any moisture from your skin and you'll actually be dry.

You probably need a better shoe liner. If you change your liner halfway through the day that can help too. They compress. But high performance socks are good too. Foot care is important. Take care of your feet and your feet will take care of you. Wherever your head and feet go the rest will follow. Once you get cold feet you're done.

@NZKiwi87 allergic to sunlight? I never seen no one sneezing because they were out in the sun. Don't believe everything you see on the Internet.

@ivorybow you've just got to get acclimated to wool there baby skin. Toughen up some. What's wrong with your skin feeling on fire when it is cold anyways? We told you wool makes you feel warm.

@laurastewart9877 when it's hot and humid I wear sandals with no socks. But if I'm going to be in some brush or something then I'll wear socks and boots. Maybe. I can be pretty adventurous in sandals too at times.

@vacafuega I'm reminded of a passage where Sherlock Holmes explains to Watson why he doesn't know certain things. You should seek that out. He puts it better than I can. A cluttered mind is a broken one. Focus is a good thing. Read the complete works if you have to in order to find it. I have.

@NZKiwi87 no one is allergic to sunlight. Solar radiation is just that, is is radiation. People can suffer from overexposure to radiation. That doesn't mean anyone is allergic to it. That's like saying people are allergic to gravity if they fall to their death. which is a funny way to put it but it's just not true. I'm sure car crash victims are allergic to inertia too.

@dresden_slowjog Albert Friedrich Emil Niemann isolated cocaine though. He was a German. By all accounts he was running quite the drug den. The guy invented the stuff! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HpJv41la5Y

Putties are more we couldn't afford to equip our army properly so just wrap yourselves with these. Best of luck to you. That's why they used them. It works I suppose. All of that wrapping and unwrapping is a god awful waste of time and effort on the troop's part though.
