  2. It is not really which but for how long you can sustain the output that matters. For a human in average condition a sustained 10th of a HP is about all we can do. With that in mind it should become clear to even the dimmest among us just why energy resources are so important to us today. Exploiting energy has radically changed how we exist. And no renewables don't cut it either. We NEED fossil fuels today in order to survive.

I'd have probably gone through 10 teams with just my present up time. Life's cheap though. Or at least it will be once Joe's migrants get here. Rapido!

  4.  @allangibson2408  I have never owned a cellular phone. I never had the need for mobile communications personally. Have you ever wondered how much energy your cell phone cost to produce? It all comes out of the same bucket. Shortsightedness such as you possess is the problem.

  7. The mind is a terrible thing. To date we've no conclusive evidence that intelligence is a survival trait. But we are gathering data on the subject. Preliminary indicators do not look good either. As one genius is noted saying, "The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race."

  10. How do you get 500 horses assembled in a team? Why very carefully, of course. Most likely the animals were used in a repetitious fashion to increase production. Many pumps or mills or whatever they're about. As opposed to one giant mechanism that services the entire site. Which would be rather impractical.

Supposedly the first may have been a French man? But who exactly that was no one knows today. It is literally history no one remembers.

  12. The trouble there is horses emit greenhouse gasses too. Exploiting energy resources is what got us to where we find ourselves today. Which is in a very precarious position. I imagine even Watt must have realized what his invention would lead to. But perhaps not? I must say it all did work out well for him. Worked out good for me too. Past performance is no guarantee of future success though.

  20. Just think of all the jobs they represented. Men to build the stables, men to grow their fodder, deliver it, tend to them. Now you'd just have an electric motor spinning away. Someone would only pop in once in a while to oil it. Maybe.

  23.  @alfamaize  I remember that. We went metric for a week. Everything was OK until everyone went to fill their gas tanks at the end of the week. Then it was not OK. Because the oil companies put the US on the international price. Gas went from $1 a gallon to $1 a liter. Which is a 3.8 X increase! Then discussion focused on where we were going to start shooting politicians. And just like that metric went away.
