US scientists use metric you doofus. Heck any scientist worth anything in the world comes to the USA anyways. It's called brain drain. That's why we're better than everyone else.

I remember when we did change. Happened in 1974 I think? Then the oil companies decided to put the USA on the international pricing standard for gasoline too. So literally overnight gas prices went from 99 cents a gallon to 99 cents a liter. No one was too happy about that. In fact revolution was brewing in the air. So to save their sorry hides the spineless politicians all reversed course. Now just don't tell foreigners how many liters are in a US gallon and everyone should remain calm.

5/16" is a popular size which works out to about 8mm. Quarter inch isn't so much of a thing with metric. 10mm is their sad excuse for 3/8s as 13mm is the poor half of an inch. 3/4" is 19mm and 17mm is very close to 11/16"

Hex sockets are worthless today. Now it is all Torx fasteners. Metric was just a scam to get mechanics to buy a whole other set of tools.

No. The USA defeated the Crown and gained our independence. So we never used the Imperial system. We use US Customary Measures.

I have scales graduated in 64s of an inch but if I am looking for that kind of accuracy I am going to use my digital calipers. 1/64th of an inch is 0.4 of a millimeter. So you're not going to see that on a metric ruler. As it is not quite a half a millimeter, now is it?

As a tool and die maker that's made some incredibly precise instrumentation I question your reasoning. Perhaps you're unaware but in precision machining we do use the decimal inch. Ain't nobody running around with wooden rulers on the shop floor measuring things by the quarter of an inch. That's not how it works. Today we use digital calipers and get either inches or millimeters by the push of a button. Although if you do need to use a scale then metric kinda blows due to how it is graduated.

It worked for a week until they were charging the same price for a liter of gasoline as they did for a gallon. Then things got ugly when it cost 4 times more to fill up a gas tank than it used to. That's the real reason the US never went metric. The rest of the world pays 4X more than we do for fuel. But our country is bigger so we need the discount. Them foreigners got no place special to go anyways. Die in place you losers!

In electronics standard pitch is a tenth of an inch. Because US engineers invented microelectronics and they all had US engineering scales at their drafting tables. So the number 2.54mm comes up a lot in mechanical data for electronic parts. You're welcome world!

@Crashed131963 a 5x10 just doesn't have the same ring to it. A 1219x2438 sounds really dumb too. But in Europe they sell sheet goods using cockamamie millimeters! If you put your studs 16" on center then sheets fit right on them. It works out perfectly.

Scientists are better off using metric. But when I am building scientists a new laboratory I'm going to be using feet and inches. I won an international award for one lab I built too. And we didn't use metric building it. Not even a little bit. We set a static pressure world's record. Ah, you don't want to know why we had to do that either. heh Scientists mess around with some pretty dangerous stuff.

@RalphReagan no one cares how fast cars are going either. The only thing that matters is who takes the checkered flag. We just know they're going fast and that's enough.
