Not all of us have your green thumb. I do some recreational gardening and I have to say that if I had to grow all of my own food I'd starve. Gardening is something easy to talk about, and much harder to actually do.

My property is wooded and I have a lot of moss. In places it is like a lawn. Did I say I had a lot of moss?

My trees need mowing. I almost killed myself last fall pruning a branch out of one. It is a good thing I had the ladder I was on tied to the tree. Because when that sucker swung back it shook the whole tree.

+Ben Mitchell Have you ever heard of the Malthusian Theory of population? He turned out to be wrong because he did not foresee some modern agricultural techniques that we developed. But he ultimately may turn out not to have been entirely wrong. It really depends on if we can continue managing to keep up with our population growth by developing new technologies to increase food production. So far we've been able to. But some resources remain finite. Like irrigation water. Sustainability is a trickier business than many imagine it to be. I do not see decentralizing food production being the answer to the kind of efficiency we require either.

Now tell me how much property you own, kid.

Trees are a lot of work, but I prefer that to the alternative. I've never had the roots under the house problem really either. Although I do have an inordinate number of exposed roots in my yard at the moment. I keep thinking about maybe doing something about it someday. Like burying them. So far it has not gotten that far along yet though. But usually when I come up with an idea I act on it eventually. So I can see it happening. There are certainly a large number of trees that could potentially hit my house someday too. If it ever happens that's why I have insurance.

Some grass around the place keeps wildlife off my thresholds. Long grass definitely breeds bugs and snakes and such here.

+Sara3346 lawn is a buffer. It keeps wildlife from camping out on my house doors. Plus trees too close to the house don't let roofs dry out, and that causes problems. I had one house where squirrels were using trees to gain access to the house. Exterminating them became quite an issue over time. Lawn also allows use of property. It is better than mud, or dust. Which are the other options when there is no lawn.

+MarvelousWesty It takes me about an hour an acre at my place. I use a 42" deck riding mower. There's more industrial equipment, but the tractor is as big as I can fit into my present shed. I also do have a garden. It is about 100x100. It takes a lot of work itself. About as much time as I want to invest in it.

+JBeen Trill your neighborhood sucks. You can tell them that I said that too.

Explosives are explosive because they have their own oxidizers in them. That's why they work. You can throw a stick of dynamite underwater and it will still blow up. That's not because the explosive sucked any oxygen out of the water either. Sticks of dynamite have no gills on them.

I did Nazi that coming.

A nice lawn does not destroy the planet. It reshapes our environment to better suit us. It is carpeting for outdoors.
2
+Garth Palmer I apply insecticide regularly. I feel it is more effective than snakes.
2
Where are these rocks going to come from? Don't assume there are rocks everywhere. There's none here.
2
It is the more insects aspect that I find particularly unappealing. Plus we have snakes here too. That thing about snakes in the grass is true.
2
4 hours? Get a riding mower already. I have a 42" deck rider and it cost like a grand when I got it. Money well spent. It has hydrostatic drive. You want hydro.

Ah grass is the least care intensive ground cover plant. Any broad leafed ground cover is too much protection for insects. So that defeats one of the purposes of grass itself.

+Sara3346 mosquitoes and ticks.
1
@everettduncan7543 because it simply is not practical to do from a maintenance standpoint. I have acres of natural land. It's no place anyone would want to be. It's infested with snakes, ticks, mosquitoes and God knows what else. It's just not civilized. It does make for a nice buffer zone though. But around my house I have swathes of grass. Which I keep short to keep the wildlife down. I also treat the grassy areas with insecticides regularly to keep those little beasties at bay too. Grass is another kind of a buffer.

You don't have to shoot squirrels in a trap. Put the trap in a garbage bag and attach it to the tailpipe of a running car. Don't ask me how I know about this. Rip one of the corners off the bag for the flow through effect. Yeah you can use the same bag over and over.
1
+Sara3346 They just go to sleep. If you consider cleaning the gristle out of a trap after you've shot a squirrel it is not faster. Carbon Monoxide poisoning is clean. No fuss, no muss. I'm no vegan but eating squirrel is fucked up. Squirrels are rats that live in trees.

You have neighbors? Peasant.

Camille Bogle Pro Tip: You can order all of them chemicals off the net. I did! If it is banned then you know it is the good stuff.
1
Camille Bogle I'm into the restricted pesticides myself. Although I could use a good defoliant too. That Round up is not what it used to be anymore.

Permethrin
1
There's data about it online.
1
What's not to love about "fast knockdown"? Permethrin kills everything.
1
I use a powder.
1
Insects eat plants. So they're not so good. Some grubs eat grass roots. It says so on insecticide bags. Though insecticide manufacturers might be a bit biased on the topic. I'm more interested in killing bugs that want to bite me. There's a lot of ticks where I live.

The Apollo missions are well documented. Your questions are easily answered there. But in brief 12, and no.

Ah, the good old days. #MAGA !

+Delilah Fox you are wasting water whenever you are using more than you need to. They're doing research in a field around the corner from me on how to more effectively water crops. Presently farms use devices called pivots and they waste a lot of water. There's a pivot down the road from me that I can get a free car wash from. Because the end sprinkler hits the road.

BadgerCheese94 in most of the USA there is enough water now. That will not last forever though. Most of the country is predicted to have a shortfall eventually. There is a survey map available to study. I've seen it. Apparently you haven't though.
