  1. The Japanese invaded and occupied two of the Aleutian Islands. They were dislodged by the US Army. One of the GIs was my grandfather. He was wounded twice in combat there. He was bayoneted and shot. I bet the other guys looked worse though. Because my grandfather was one tough SOB.

  3.  @Melissa0774  I heard a story of some German POWs that escaped. I think one might have even gotten back to Germany? He escaped while he was in Canada and made it to the USA before the USA was at war. I've never heard of any successful escapes other than that one. Most German POWs were not interested in escaping. They'd won the prize. Being interned in America was about the safest anyone was in the war. Although there was one isolated incident where a deranged American guard killed some German POWs. Some did resent German POWs. Most rather liked them though. German POWs were decent white folks. That was pretty popular back then. Just how it was. I've heard a fair number of German POWs ended up coming back to America after the war. They had fond memories of their time here. But they all did have to go back to Germany first. When they did they went back to a ruined country. Which made America that much more attractive to them.
