Proximity shells were only used over water until the end of the war due to a fear of them being recovered and reverse engineered. Those shells had glass vacuum tubes in them to make them work. Really tiny tubes the size of little Christmas lights. The size of the really little Christmas lights. Although bigger than grain of wheat bulbs. Still incredibly miniaturized for the time. Solid state electronics weren't invented until after the war was over so tubes were all they had at the time. Hats off to the nutter that thought glass vacuum tubes could survive the forces an artillery shell are subjected to. It turns out they were right. Once they were cleared for land use Patton loved the magic shells. He used them against massed infantry attacks for air bursts over enemy troops. They'd go off when they were right over the ground.

@dullahan7677 Duplex drive tanks did work well in calm water. They don't work too swift in choppy water though. The invasion shouldn't have taken place when it did due to weather but Eisenhower decided to go anyways. It was a calculated risk. The element of surprise was increased but other issues arose too.

Warfare is a ridiculously impractical business on the best of days. Any edge you can have over your enemy pays off in spades too. The Mongols were so successful simply because they had stirrups and their enemies didn't.

@brandenaguilar2962 it certainly made the horse a more stable fighting platform and it's remarkable others didn't come up with it. But things that seem obvious in retrospect aren't always so simple in the moment.
