  1. It was not that bad. A few thousand. Nothing compared to some other battles. But it all could have gone much better than it did. Considering how much went wrong it is remarkable we won. The bombardment missed the German defenses, the tanks mostly sank before they got to the beaches, the big guns weren't where we thought they were.

  2. Stalin begged the western Allies to open up a front in western Europe. If the millions of troops that were tied down in the west were available for the Eastern Front things would have gone much differently.

  3. sverkeren Killing soldiers is not how wars are ultimately won. There's a bit more to it than that really. Quite a bit in fact. That is why every country still had millions of men under arms when they finally surrendered.

  4. Actually Allied deception was so complete that for days after the attack German High Command was still convinced it was just a diversion. It took the Germans about 3 days to finally realize what was going on.
