+Tanim Xubayer Microsoft never intentionally set out to help anyone else earn money besides themselves. But one of the unintended consequences of Microsoft's predatory business practices today is Linux. It is no coincidence that Linus first wrote Linux on an x86 PC. I'm not sure if he had a True Blue IBM, or one of the clones. But Microsoft's complicity in the development of the clone market was, and remains a major factor in the x86 being the dominant platform regardless. I thank Microsoft for the proliferation of cheap PCs often. I don't run their OS, but I still appreciate what they did. Most of the PCs I own today had Windows on them when I got them. I thank Linus for helping me fix that too..

erbgeg egerger maybe you don't, but I do.

George Edwards Stallman provided THE REST? How do you figure? GNU code is less than 10% of the total system. There are many applications, and deamons that GNU has absolutely nothing to do with that make up a Linux distribution. Did GNU write my web browser, or Desktop Environment? I don't think so! How is the kernel no more integral than any of the other parts either? The kernel actually will run without any of the other parts. But no other part will run without the kernel. I mean be more wrong. You're so good at it. Play to your strength.

***** Linus uses a lot of other people's ideas in the Linux kernel today too. I don't know if Linus actually codes for the kernel at all today. He probably writes a line here, or there. Mostly he just reviews code though I believe. He can't even review it all today. He has a layer of maintainers he trusts that look at most of it for him.

I want to know the story about the radioactive genie on Milwaukee's flag now. He is in the top right quadrant of the gear.

+addam liu What about Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson? They developed UNIX, after Ritchie developed the C programming language with Brian Kernighan. I think Linus needed those items to make Linux. Just a little bit.

A tunnel in a seismically active region, what could possibly go wrong?

+erbgeg egerger Well Linus did, and still uses GNU tools. Plus he uses their old license.

QuakePhil The talk was about Linus, and Linux. If you want to hear about GNU then get RMS to TED.

+Overlord of Evil actually with Busybox Linux is an operating system unto itself these days. Just the Linux kernel will boot up to a prompt.
1
+erbgeg egerger Linux uses GCC and make. Who do you think wrote those programs? I'll give you a hint, his initials are RMS

***** No only code written by the Free Software Foundation is GNU. They do have their own projects. They even have a web site. Just using the GPL does not automatically make a project GNU.

+Edmondo Duma think of something beyond the current wars yourself. Edison accomplished many things. We still use the screw base he developed with more modern light bulbs today too. You may take the mechanism for granted because of its ubiquitous nature today but make no mistake, it was innovative. So was the phonograph, and motion pictures too.

Edmondo Duma Edison was not a scientist. He was a businessman. Linus does hold the trademark for Linux too.

I'd agree with you if we still had mills where we could work the little urchins.

uspowerbase you obviously do not know the history of IBM clones. There was never anything open about the PC BIOS. It was clean room reverse engineered. The ISA bus was open, that's it. Windows was always made by Microsoft too. While Microsoft was developing Windows they were sabotaging OS 2/Warp with IBM. It is likely that Microsoft all along intended to just use IBM to create the PC marketplace. Then Microsoft used that platform to build their software empire on.

+Sge2 Qqq yeah but Edison died a lot richer

If this guy has his way he'll be out of work and his kid will be on the street. Then the cycle will repeat.
