  4. Not in large part no. We could disappear from this planet and there would still be hurricanes. But they would cause no human suffering then. So there's that. I'd say the biggest issue today is human population. There's no place where a disaster can occur these days where it won't impact some people. Catastrophic events happened hundreds of years ago and no one heard about of them. Because there was no one there to witness it. Today we hear about everything around the globe. So that makes it appear like there are more events today when in fact we're just recording more events. Then there's the larger potential victim pool we have today which further skews statistics. In the past where were just a fraction of potential victims as we have now. More people means more people will be impacted. The media is quick to tell us that 1.5 million people are without power. 100 years ago there weren't 1.5 million people who had power. Where are the tears for the hundreds of millions of powerless back then?

  7. Believe it. What's scary is it could be worse. There was a cyclone in the far east recently with 175 MPH winds. It can get worse than that too. 200 MPH winds are not out of the question. Now past 200 MPH is pretty unbelievable for hurricane winds. Not completely out of the realm of reason though I don't think. I'd believe maybe 225 MPH? At that when it passed there would just be bare scoured earth left. That would even rip grass out of the ground. It would look like the Moon.
