The biggest parking lot I've ever been in is Disney World. You park there and they pick you up in a tram. You're not walking to the main gate. Not unless you brought a camel with you to make the trek over the tractless desert of blacktop between you and it.

Maybe they're planning on coming out with a lot of merchandise and they're anticipating not wanting to carry it long distances?

Planting those trees are a lot of work too. I've done it. We take extra care to really line them up in straight lines. It isn't something you think about really. Not unless you've done it yourself.
3
It depends whether they're a retailer or a shopper.

@5stardave they know how tired they're going to be when they come out.

Screw the planet. We all only go around once. So I'm going around in style and comfort.

And what happens if it rains on Friday? Do we just bring wreckers to pull cars out of mud?

Public transit is for plebes.

@danielcarroll3358 what good is money doing you if you don't have a car? Money by itself has no intrinsic value. It's what you can get with money that has worth. Cars are the coolest things on the planet too. At least the cool ones are. With a million dollars you could get a 300 SL gullwing Mercedes. OK maybe not today. I knew a guy that had 5 of those though. They were only worth about a mil a piece back then too. Now they're worth about 3 times that. Let's see what a Shelby 289 AC Cobra is going for today. Yeah you could get one of those in good condition. Excellent is 1.25 mil. Now that's a car https://assets.hemmings.com/blog/wp-content/uploads//2015/08/1965-Cobra-Dragonsnake-1.jpg Save your pennies and maybe someday you can afford one? My car resembles a Cobra but it isn't.

@Александр-ю2ы6р What's not to like about a car? You can stand up in a car. If it is a convertible or has T tops. I'll tell you what's to like about a car. They go door to door anywhere you want to, any time you want to. I mean if you want to go out and get chocolate chip cookies at 3 AM you can do it in your car. I missed getting on the last train out of the City once. Two thirty in the morning they kicked us out of the train station too. I sure wished I had my own car then.
1
@Александр-ю2ы6р freedom is not cost free. Fuel taxes are what finance the road system too. Every time I fill my gas tank I am contributing to the infrastructure of the roadways with cash money. But you wouldn't know that because you're never reading the tax stamp on a gas pump. My money is making your world go around.

Who's going to pay for all of these lofty plans of yours?

@5stardave nothing to do with commercial construction, that's for sure. People don't seem to understand how malls are built. They're concrete boxes. You see windows in malls? You want to live in a house without windows? You know what it's like to cut a window into a concrete block wall? I don't know how expensive it'd be to cut just one window into a concrete block wall but if I were to bid it I'd charge maybe $50,000? That's for one window! You need to somehow sneak a lintel in the wall over the window opening. Without the whole wall collapsing in the process.

We drive to be free. You bust your ass you want to have you own private transportation. Riding the bus is for bag ladies.
1
Mass transit is for homeless people. I guess it's OK for commuters. But you have a private vehicle so you can go door to door on your own schedule. Which is what holiday shopping is all about. It's what you do for you and yours.

They cost about $1,000 a tree. When you consider what the tree cost and the labor to plant it. I worked on a job once where we planted 2,000 trees in and around a parking lot. The trees planted in islands in the lot itself are the most work. We plant those really straight.
1
@catprog Parking garages are not really buildings. I mean most folks aren't driving cars around in their homes or offices. That's a lot of weight moving around on the floor.
1
Underground parking is dangerous. There's bad people in the world that'll do bad things if they think no one is watching them.

They weren't better for one lady by where I used to live. She got car jacked and murdered. It was in a really upscale mall too. Which made it all the more shocking when it happened. We're talking in an area where per capita income is in the 6 figures. I knew a kid that got $2,500 a week allowance. So some pretty rich folks. Per capita is just an average. That's every man, woman and child. I lived in the poor town next door. Our per capita was only 92K a year. But in Short Hills they're filthy rich!

Then people go where it is cheaper to conduct business. And you have nothing. Welcome to the land of unintended consequences.

@bergonius we have a free market so there are no limits. My state takes advantage of all of the states around it by being tax free. When I go shopping half the cars in the lots here have out of state tags on them. It is a dog eat dog world. Us dogs over here are eating good too.
1
@bergonius property owners are not going to charge merchants cheaper rent. Merchants are not going to give customers goods cheaper even if their rent is lower anyways. The only thing that's going to happen is consumers are going to pay more and be driven away. The buck stops in the first pocket it lands in. That's the first rule in business. Maximize profits.

We like to get in on the ground floor.
1
Ah yes official procrastination day.
1
Or bad weather that leaves the ground in an undrivable condition on the busiest shopping day of the year. Which would put the mall out of business. You have to be prepared for the worst eventuality always. It is surprising how tenuous survival really is in business. Consumer confidence takes a lot to build up and it can all go away like that. It drops a lot faster than it rises.
1
It's going to last for my lifetime. I got enough land to park about 200 cars on my property. But I'm OK with the 3 I got now.
1
Because people don't like getting mugged?
1
How so? I go where I want when I want.
1
You're not considering when they come out laden with packages. No one is going to want to go far then. Some of those people are there to buy 65" TVs.
