Harbor Freight is definitely rolling the dice when it comes to power tools. But if you like to gamble then it's fun.

Yeah I call it the Chinese store. Chinesium! Ever since they bioattacked us I've cooled off on China. Just can't trust some folks.

I have an old machete and it's OK. I think it's a military one? I bought it at a flea market. It takes a keen edge and retains it even hacking small woody brush down. So find a mil surplus machete if you can. They're a cut above.

If you want to build your tool collection up I'd suggest you go to flea markets and garage sales. You can find stuff there at prices even Harbor Freight can't compete with and it is often better quality. I remember going to one sale and I got a Bosch SDS hammer drill in the case for a dollar. I don't know what was going on there. It works and everything.

Harbor Freight tools are inconsistent. Some's good some's bad. If you insist on it being good across the board you're going to be disappointed then.

@dustinryan9671 what we have today is survivor bias. Whatever was junk 100 years ago was junked long ago. So all that's left now are the outstanding examples. Which can make it appear as if everything was great back then. But they had junk yards years ago too. Although some engineering practices today do lead to shortened product lifespans. Problems that didn't exist in the past. They weren't putting microprocessors in everything 100 years ago. They were simpler times.

@dustinryan9671 not all Chinese tools are the same. Not all of China is the same. There's the mainland and then there's Taiwan. Today I'd say taiwanese tools are top notch. They know what they're doing there. The CCP on the other hand has issues.

@dustinryan9671 tools made in Taiwan will be marked Taiwan. The distinction is big. At least to the people in Taiwan. Who at one time were from mainland China. But they fled the communists. They want no part of the CCP either. Although I'm sure they'd like to get the mainland back for themselves someday. Right now they're just happy to be independent. Mainland China ain't too happy about that.

The better quality Harbor Freight hand tools are fine. Whether tools break or not depends on how they're used or abused. Ratchet wrenches are not breaker bars. A little mechanical aptitude can go a long way in life. Common sense is an uncommon trait often too it seems. Just reefing on everything like a strength test isn't always the best strategy to do things.

@Musclecars4l1fe Harbor Freight has a lot of different factories make the tools they brand. So it is impossible to make a blanket statement about them. I have some Central Pneumatic tools that are decent. I've had some of those cheap die grinders blow up too. But they're so cheap I don't feel they owed me anything when they let go. Even name brand air tools don't last forever. My 3/8s Rodac impact is acting up now.

Doing something like that is a great way to build customer loyalty. I used to buy a lot of stuff at Harbor Freight. I liken it to gambling. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. I always felt I was on the good side of things though. If a tool sucked I just chucked it and got something better.
