Modern steel is vastly superior to ancient steel. We just have much better process control and analysis than the ancients did. So long story short, you're full of it. We'd know more about the ancient steel than the ancients did. They'd have no idea why their material exhibited certain properties but we would.

@naradaian they did it by hand because that was their only option. They didn't have a huge rolling mill to use. If we could transport a steel mill into the past they'd stand around it like 2001 apes next to the obelisk. They'd think God left it. Even if a sword could cut through a barrel which is doubtful itself, there's no way a human arm could generate the force required. Use your head. It's a sword, not a lightsaber. We have milling machines with hundreds of horsepower using tungsten carbide tooling and they're not making cuts like that. They could mill through the best of swords in a few seconds though. Just turn it into so many metal chips.

Kevlar is 5 times stronger than steel so not the same.

@JH_789 these days one can never tell. I've encountered some fantastically ignorant people on the Internet.

They had much better wood than we do. So it wasn't just wood but old growth wood. It is shocking how quickly the quality of wood has fallen in recent times. We've just harvested and used all of the good wood already. They lacked the manpower to do such a thing.

@tims8603 we as a species exploit trees wherever we go. I've heard of people that had to dig up tree roots to gain access to it as a resource for fuel. Talk about over harvesting. When you have to dig wood out of the ground you've gone way too far then.

Just because an Age has begun doesn't mean that Age's namesake has completely taken over. The beginning of anything doesn't always immediately cause the end of all other things that are being supplanted.

@NetshadeX it is nothing that's vitally important to do. I'm sure if they absolutely had to for survival they could manage to do better than they did. But they don't so it is all moot.
