  1. What is to stop anything from hitting the Earth? To understand the concentration of impacts you just have to look at the surface of the Moon which gets bombarded at about the same rate as the Earth does. With no erosion or plate tectonics craters are preserved better on the Moon.

  2. Not really. There's only a finite number of asteroids that is constantly dwindling as they strike things. So as times goes on there's less flying around that can hit us. Because most of whatever could hit us already has.
