  5.  @lawr5764  as I understand it due to the crystal matrix structure that makes up the carbon atoms in diamond it can be cleaved along those lines. So diamonds are cut with hammers and chisels. Now how ancient people knew about all of this I've no idea but apparently they did. Trial and error I suppose? Then diamonds are also lapped with diamond paste too. Diamond is hard enough to abrade itself.

  6.  @lawr5764  I think diamonds can be cleaved with metal chisels. Diamonds are really hard but they're not unbreakable. Glass is really hard too but it shatters. I don't know how people figure out how to hit diamonds. But diamonds have atomic grain to them. They're crystals. Crystalline? Something like that. Diamond cutting is a skill. Or at least we're lead to believe it is. They could rely on sheer chance and dumb luck for all I know. But I do know it's possible to split diamonds. Maybe they just keep hitting them until they break?
