Patton's claim to fame goes back to the Mexican War. He was the first American to ride into battle in a motorized vehicle. He chased Pancho Villa in a car. That was like in 1912 or something?

@unitedwestand5100 if he wasn't wounded then he was in the wrong place and Patton was just helping him out to where he belonged.

Truman had no choice. A home island invasion was out of the question. The first 4 waves of troops were a 100% write off. No survivors. Who can issue that order? The answer is no one. We were actually considering just starving them all to death. That was rejected because it'd have taken too long. The war would have dragged on for another 10 years. We actually killed more firebombing them. Operation Meetinghouse remains the greatest loss of life due to a military action in history. It is estimated that a quarter of a million were killed in that one bombing raid. The atomic strikes were less than that. That was some sophisticated engineering too. The bombs were dropped in a V pattern to intensify the blaze. It was like a big shaped charge. Over 14 square miles of the most heavily populated land on Earth were consumed in the inferno. I often wonder how the planning sessions went for that one. OK so how do we maximize damage? People got together and rationally planned out that insanity. It wasn't just we're going to launch 328 heavy bombers and see what happens. That's not how you kill a quarter million people in one shot.

Why would the US lose lives for territory deep in the Soviet occupation zone? That's just dumb. Eisenhower was a lot of things, but dumb wasn't one of them.
2
@captainamerica6525 what wasn't possible? That the US would suffer casualties attacking Berlin? Yes I think we definitely would have. Again, there was no point in US forces crossing the already agreed upon zone lines. So US troop movements at the end of the war reflected that.

@captainamerica6525 the USSR was working to get into a position to invade Germany. If their communists couldn't just take Germany over ahead of time. To this very day the west has bad relations with Russia. But the Germans were bad guys for it. More like fall guys.

The greatest American General was Robert E. Lee. He did the most with the least. Heck he almost won the Civil War. The South had butkus to fight with too. Sometimes I think Lee threw the war on purpose. Because up until Gettysburg he was unstoppable.

@manilanoakes3966 it ain't easy pimping.

@unitedwestand5100 I think he meant Patton hit his own helmet. I don't think people in hospitals wear helmets.

But did Patton try to understand white rage?

@captainamerica6525 history always portrays the losers as the bad guys and the winners as the good guys. The reality isn't always so clear cut though. I always found it odd how both the Soviets and the Germans attacked Poland at the exact same time yet the western Allies only declared war against Germany. That little fact is glossed over in history as not being worthy of mention. Yet that is precisely what happened. Then we're told that when Germany invades the USSR they capture millions of Russian soldiers. Why were Russian soldiers there? The correct answer is not they were called up to defend against the German attack. That didn't happen. Those millions of troops were there before the Germans attacked. Stalin was famously paralyzed for weeks after the surprise attack. So no troops were moved then. The popular historical narrative is hard to reconcile with facts. Maybe Germany was entirely within their rights to do what they did? Then there's the take over the world propaganda that gets tossed around. Nothing supports that conclusion either. If the western Allies hadn't declared war against Germany they never would have struck west. But once war was declared they had no choice. They had to secure their flank. The real snakes in the grass were France and England. Their motives and actions are the ones we should question.

@captainamerica6525 the British and Americans should have never been involved. Both were enemies of the Soviet Union until the Soviet Union collapsed too. Like Patton said, We were on the wrong side.
1
@captainamerica6525 the USA was not neutral before Pearl Harbor. They'd already shelled and chased and harassed German submarines. They were already supplying the enemy with war materials too. You have a strange idea of what being neutral is. At least the Bushes were also supplying Germany. So good on them.
1
@captainamerica6525 ships sailing into a warzone with aid for an enemy should expect to be targeted. In fact they should not be there at all. Regardless the Germans were not practicing unrestricted warfare until war was declared. Americans would fire on submarines on sight though. Canada was an enemy combatant too.
1
@captainamerica6525 well yeah. Britain declared war on Germany so they were the aggressors. Supplies should be restricted to them. Why do you defend those war mongers?
1
@captainamerica6525 invading Poland? There is no Poland! It is ancestral Germanic land! Stolen from the Germans in that travesty of a Versailles Treaty.
1
@captainamerica6525 fact is the land belonged to Germany! Screw the League of Criminals. The French and the Britons always wanted to hold Germany back. That's what both world wars were about. They could have empires but saw that no one else could.
1
@captainamerica6525 you think the Germans wanted to go to war against the rest of the world? They only wanted Russia up to the Ural Mountains. I don't think that was asking for too much.

@davidthomson6954 there's more history between the lines than you're read in any history book. The popular narrative everyone knows about WW2 does not hold up to serious scrutiny. But it all makes perfect sense if you know about human nature. My favorite is, The Nazis tried to take over the world! That was not their intent at all. If anything they attacked the country that tried to take over the world. They were going to start with Germany too. Because Germany was on their front step.
1
@davidthomson6954 what's to learn? The many do for the few. That's the way it's always been. Ours is not to reason why. Ours is but to do and die.
