  1. A minute to boot? I guess that's not too bad. A dual core 1.8GHz CPU is a creeper today though. I've owned a couple Gateway towers over the years. As far as prebuilt systems go I always liked them. I got a 1 GHz P3 Gateway to boot in 22 seconds. Custom kernel with fluxbox WM. I used it as my CNC controller for a while.

  2. I just run Debian. Debian is the universal OS so it runs on everything. Low resource systems do need special configuration to maximize their capability though. You can't install the default setup and expect it to fly.
