If those companies were only price competitive with their competition.

Gnome was always a steaming pile of unstable crap. You're just too much of a rook to know about the 1.X days. Toxic? Respect is earned. I'll tell you the number one reason why Linux has not succeeded in the general market. Half of the population is of below average intelligence. You can lead a human to knowledge but you can't make them think!

You don't think it could have anything to do with their Microsoft partnerships, do you? Microsoft wouldn't pressure their retailers, would they? Nah.

Buy decent hardware and it will work in Linux.
3
Let's not use one poorly made Linux distribution as an example of Linux as a whole.
3
At this point any desktop victory would be a Pyhrric one. Because the Age of desktop computing is over now. So winning a battle where all sides lose is meaningless. But in a market dominated by enthusiasts Linux does stand the best chance it ever did of gaining market share.
3
Foolish users. Linux runs better on older hardware. BTW I should add that Linux supports far more platforms than any other OS does or ever has. You can literally run Linux on a potato. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=19586

+Draško Perović people often fail to appreciate what is for whatever reasons. In this case I'd say so they can feel morally superior about themselves.
2
Power computing is not for everyone. Though more would like to be able to operate computers competently than are capable of doing it themselves. I'd like to be better at it myself. The difference is I accept my limitations and do not blame my shortcomings on the OS that I run. I instead make the effort required to do whatever it is that I want to do.

+rockialien wandering soul don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel.

+Bill Gates those who do not understand UNIX are condemned to reinvent it poorly. Which is exactly what your company did. QDOS was a clone of CP/M which itself was a rip off of UNIX.
1
Wrong viewpoint. While a PC is a PC no one runs PCs today. Today we use clones which do not adhere to any of the original standards. Often hardware does not conform to any standard at all. I challenge you to find any specification for the current handling capacity of a parallel port post 1990. I know what a few days of searching for that will yield because I've already done it. It came up when I made this https://www.instructables.com/id/Parallel-Port-Break-Out-Board-BOB/ I'm truly one of those next level tech nerds. So I have what can be called a qualified opinion on the matters at hand.

You would be hard pressed getting by with a x86 CPU today. Now AMD64 is more popular. There are different variants among even 64 bit processors too. Obtain and run the cpuid command to see a mind boggling array of options. When I run that command it spits out 1408 lines of output which overflows my terminal buffer.
1
Then that means either your initrd has way too many modules in it or you have identical laptops.
1
It is open source so you can take care of it yourself.

I wouldn't say Debian stable never has any problems. But I would say that Debian stable is virtually trouble free. Well, one issue that Debian stable always has is the packages are always pretty stale. I'm presently dealing with a matter due to that now. git diff --no-index /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/PyQt5 /usr/local/lib/python3.5/dist-packages/PyQt5 Yeah one has to stay and one has to go. But may not be as easy as just removing a Debian package.
1
@Nick te Lindert you can run any kernel you want. I would suggest you run what does work best. You are also encouraged to file bug reports against what does not work. Regardless of your personal experience Intel invests heavily into Linux. You would be hard pressed to find any other entity that invests more into Linux in fact. Intel hardware works flawlessly for most of us too.
1
@Nick te Lindert why is switching a kernel not a real solution? We are talking about Linux here. I've switched kernels a dozen times in a day. Whatever it takes until it works. No one that does not care writes their own compiler. If anyone is coming off like they're grasping for straws here it is you. You've already admitted the solution exists. Doing that you hacked the branch out from underneath yourself. You're done here. Bye.
1
@Nick te Lindert then don't run Linux. You will not be missed.
1
Me either. But I don't have time to follow Microsoft.
1
The Blue Wave who is, "their and they"? Linux will run on most any PC built so what it costs for anything else is what it costs for Linux too. Plus Linux will run on a Raspberry PI. They cost like $35 new. Some PI models as little as $10.
1
The Blue Wave I am not a fan of laptops myself. As with anything it is best to check compatibility before you purchase. I am not going to sit here and make excuses for scumbag manufacturers that fail to properly support their products. I just don't support them with my cash. If they can't contribute to the Linux kernel then I can't contribute to their bottom line either.
1
The Blue Wave I doubt if you are capable of processing the truth. It seems beyond your capabilities. By sheer random chance alone you should be at least half right yet you defy the odds. Here's a tip for you though, you are not the arbiter is what anyone else needs.
1
The Blue Wave with the corporate support Linux already enjoys now the ones that don't support Linux are the ones out in the cold today. We got Intel and Microsoft. We don't need anyone else. But we have AMD, Nvidia and IBM now too. Just to name a few others. Any loser out there that doesn't support Linux does it at their own peril. Windows 11 is going to have a Linux kernel in it. I guess the holdouts will have to get in then, now won't they?
1
@josecarlosxyz Competitive price? I wouldn't run Windows 10 if you paid me. I'm talking damned good money too! I value my mental health too much.

+ Bill Gates Gnome was created just because of butt hurt caused by KDE. So it is fair to say with no KDE there would be no Gnome. That butt hurt was due to QT's licensing. KDE using QT caused FLOSS zealots to make a competing project. Which is pretty pathetic in hindsight.
1
+Yehia Falcon whether it is nice or not it is what it is. I am not going to gloss over the truth just to protect some people's feelings either. That serves no one. People unwilling or unable to dispel their ignorance about Linux are not going to have the best experience with Linux.
1
+Yehia Falcon people proficient in Linux are a select group that you may classify as being elite in that regard. Believe it or not, not everyone happens to be good at running Linux. There are those that do find some tasks in Linux somewhat challenging. So the reputation Linux has earned for being hard is a deserved one.
1
+Yehia Falcon read it however you want to. Being a straight shooter myself I keep it simple. If folks think they may be too dumb to run Linux I agree with them. The rabbit hole Linux is goes deep. If you don't know that then you've just never gone there yourself.
1
+Stephen Planck joking about what? I do not care for any of the current DEs which is why I do not use any of them now. Well my CNC controller still has XFCE on it. But I only ever run two programs on that particular PC. The motion controller front end and a file manager to grab the code files. So what UI that system has hardly counts. I just never bothered changing it. KDE 3.5 was the best DE I ever saw on Linux. But due to library name space clashes it is not practical to continue running that today. At least I never figured out how to deal with it.

Get them to run a Window Manager. They take even less resources. Right now my favorite is Window Maker. It isn't the lightest but it has a configuration utility. So I don't have to hand edit configuration files. That's nice.
