  3. Gnome is the project of hopeless idealists. They are the quintessential dirty hipsters. They saw KDE using Qt and they had to poo poo it while ranting how holier than thou they all were. Unironically, of course.

  6.  @dorukhan8707  KDE release in 1998 and Gnome released in 1999. One following the other is no coincidence. KDE used Qt libraries and the licensing of those triggered FLOSS zealots in the community. Their response was to make Gnome. The in their eyes "pure" FLOSS DE. So Gnome was a project born of hate. They should have named it Goblin.

  7. Enlightenment is a DE? I always thought it was just a WM. It was the last time I ran it. But that was a very long time ago. On their website they're calling themselves a WM. Sucks about Wayland.

  9. When things change you usually have the option of being obstinate and not changing yourself. You just have to get what you like and install and use it. You get the last source tree and build it. Sometimes you have to port the code some so it still builds. There's a couple guys still keeping KDE 3.5 running today.

  10. Afterstep and Windowmaker (Window Maker today) are Next clones. BTW I use Window Maker today.

  11.  @UteChewb  Windowmaker was a project developed by a contributor to Afterstep. Eventually he just went off and did his own thing. Although I don't think Windowmaker is a fork of Afterstep. It is pretty much the successor though.

  13. I still have PTSD from running Gnome 1. I'd use Gnome when I got drunk just to watch Bug buddy pop up. It was the only time I could tolerate the desktop. I'm talking blind drunk. Bug buddy would pop up and I'd point at it and laugh hysterically. I'm on the wagon today and I just can't run Gnome anymore.

  16.  @ameliabuns4058  yes and things were better then. I still install software via the command line today. I would never use a flatpak or a snap either because they are technically inferior. Learn how shared objects work already.

  17.  @ameliabuns4058  I've certainly had multiple DEs and WMs installed at the same time. Today I am not interested in that sort of thing so it is not something I do anymore. I've never had to reinstall to fix anything in Linux ever myself. There's always a way to fix things. That's because Linux can host itself in a chroot environment. So even if you manage to make your system unbootable by damaging the kernel you can still manage to fix it. If you just hose the GUI that's trivial you can still work in the console. Don't take this the wrong way but it sounds to me like you've a lot to learn. When things break look at that as an opportunity to increase your knowledge. Try to figure out why they broke and in the process understand how they are supposed to work.

  18.  @ameliabuns4058  how are they breaking each other? They are completely separate from each other. They have their own binaries, libraries and configuration files. Each exists by itself. One thing Linux lacks is a registry like Windows has. So the components of Linux cannot mix. Although there are projects that do try to promote interoperability. Things like freedesktop, xdg and dbus. It's still a loose association.

  21. Qt is problematic in that it is not GPL. So it really clashes with the rest of Linux. I hate to admit the Gnome team has a valid point but they kinda do. For the average user it isn't really an issue but it is less than pure. When you mention industry that's where the problem would really be.

  22.  @123creator7  Qt's license is its own. Qt is considered a "dual licensed" product. Qt is not GPL. You can pretend it is. But do certain things and you'll be receiving registered mail from Trolltech's lawyers.

  24. Well yeah. Linux is only ever as good as anyone can configure it to be. You can have a really janky Linux system. It is allowed. A lot of people would probably think my Linux system is janky. But to me it's dope.

  25. They can and they do. But it doesn't always work out. I just looked and Unity is well and dead today. The last I looked the KDE 3.5 fork is still going though. I used it for a while. It's called TDE Trinity.

  26.  @wacesferpit  I think if the Gnome devs ever discovered Tab Window Manager they'd be like yes, this is it! They'd slap their name on it and declare the project done. Everyone should run twm once just to experience what insanity is really like. TWM used to be installed by default. But it isn't anymore. Because if you landed in it you'd think your X session was broken. You can still manually install and use it though. TWM is the default passthrough if nothing else is configured.
