  1. It was ergotism. A fungus that grew on rye related to LSD. They were basically raving. Purple haze!

  2. Germs weren't the cause of the plague. The plague was carried by fleas. The pathogen was transmitted when a flea bit a victim. I'm not sure if vinegar repels fleas. But everyone was flea ridden back then. They didn't have the first clue what the disease vector was either. Their best guess was it was a punishment from God.
