Intellectual property is a commodity. You cannot demand to get it for free. People that buy into proprietary systems buy into the notion of owned IP too. It is what was ordered. So do not be surprised when that is what is gotten. Anyone that doesn't like it is free to go design their own system, and make it open. Good luck with that.

Tim Ramich fuel taxes only partly pay for roads. More people benefit from roads than just people that drive on them too.

Tim Ramich What if your house caught fire? Wouldn't it be nice if a fire department could travel to your residence to put it out? They're probably not going to fly to your domicile though. Maybe it is your neighbor's house that is burning to the ground? It'd still be nice for you if someone went there to put it out. The benefits of a road network are far, and wide.

What is wrong with Apple maximizing their profit? Doesn't everyone want the most return on their investment? The more Apple gets, the more they can offer consumers new useless gadgets they do not need in the first place.

Perverted Poképuffs The analogy is poor because in this case Apple made the hearts, so they are theirs to keep. They are Apple iHearts. If you don't like that then get a Samsung, or something. They are not in fact hearts, but rather designed, and manufactured products that Apple has complete ownership, and control over. Apple is a walled garden ecosystem. It always was, and anyone not comfortable with that simply should not do business with them. If you're looking for ease then Apple will gladly sell you a replacement for whatever you have of theirs that has broken. Go stand in line.
1
Perverted Poképuffs Who told you that Apple does not have a right to retain its intellectual property? Apple does not owe you, or anyone else for that matter, shit! While they may use generic parts what you want is access to their copyrighted circuit design. They do not owe you that. When anyone purchases an Apple product that is exactly what they receive. They do not receive full rights to possess all IP related to that product. In fact Apple can declare anything it wants to be a Trade Secret! FFS if the shoe was on the other foot you'd damn well want to protect your interests. Just like you are trying to do now, but failing to, because you are on shaky ground.

RalphArwen You can look at it. But do not expect to see the author's notes they used to help them create their work. No user serviceable parts inside.
1
The thing is no corporation designed the human anatomy. But Apple did in fact design every last speck of their hardware. So they own it. Lock, stock, and barrel.
1
redrocketgame Apple makes products that if used correctly last long enough. If you're an idiot, and you spill liquids on your electronics then you deserve to pay. It is not Apple's concern if the world cannot manage its E-Trash either. Take that up with your representative.

***** If you actually paid attention you might see that many devices come in because they were damaged by the user. They are also out of warranty by the time they come into Louis' shop too. Apple has a responsibility to their shareholders to maximize profit. That's it.
1
***** it is the nature of electronics for it to be a rock, and hard place deal. Apple is under no obligation to make it any easier either. That very quality is their bread, and butter. For them to play it to the hilt is true genius too.
1
czdaniel1 great minds think alike. heh

***** Apple could go anywhere in the world that has a favorable climate for them to operate in. Can the government afford it if they leave?
1
Louis Rossmann So you want to circumvent part of their business model? Did you get the memo for the TPS reports? I'm going to need you to come in this weekend.
1
diecast jam A corporation will simply leave to a country with a better climate. Suck on that politicians. No more tax revenue for you! Your dumb as a box of rocks constituents are all out of jobs now too. Good luck getting reelected loser. The real power lies in the hands that have the purse strings. Apple is the richest corporation in the world today too. Which means no one has more clout than they do.
1
diecast jam you'd be surprised what incentives First World countries are willing to give corporations like Apple to move to there.

AmaranteStryfe I defend the right of entities to retain ownership of their private property. Sure, why not? Maybe we'll just move 15 families of illegals into your house and see how you like it?
1
AmaranteStryfe don't be so sure that you have purchased unlimited rights to the intellectual property contained within a product when you simply buy a device today. They are not stopping you from taking the device wherever you want to either. They are just not supplying their intellectual property to all comers either.

Louis Rossmann I understand the analogy perfectly. I also see it is a poor one. They are two totally different leagues. Automobiles are heavily regulated. Consumer electronics just need to pass compliance tests when manufactured. Tampering with a Check Engine light is a federal offense. How about we slap some regulation like that on the laptop repair industry? If you want to make the analogy.
1
Tim Ramich why don't you look it up on the net before you go spouting off? Yes tampering with the Check Engine light is a federal crime. It is considered altering the emissions control system. Because it is a part of that system. Like if you punched out your catalytic converter.
1
Tim Ramich you want to distribute the property of individuals to the Proletariat, and I'm the commie? Yeah, right!
1
Tim Ramich you are advocating that the means of production be put into the hands of the workers!
1
Tim Ramich I argue for private ownership. Which is the diametric opposite of communism. I want to keep all of you serfs down! Beholden to the Man.
1
Tim Ramich you got that right. Trump 2016
1
Tim Ramich no one is hauling me off. They'd have to find me first!
1
Tim Ramich you want to legally compel companies to divulge information regarding the products they produce. That's statism.
1
Tim Ramich Bob said you're pink!

megaspeed2v2 it is funny how you agree that Apple has the right to retain its software code. Yet you fail to recognize that schematics, and even board are copyrighted materials too. Because they are. Apple's business model is well known to be a walled garden approach. That is why they do not allow clones of their products to be built by other manufacturers. Although I do remember when they did. For a couple of months. Then they proceeded to reverse themselves, and in the process torpedo all of those emerging businesses with products on the market.
