Getting things to work in Linux is the game itself. It's like a puzzle game. The OS is the game!

Everyone loves watching a good train wreck.

It is good to hear that it has worked out for you. It doesn't for a lot of folks. People get too Windows institutionalized.

Plot twist: Anthony is just going to tell them both to RTFM.

That is when knowing the commands which and locate come in handy. And when all else fails find / -name. People should also be aware of the updatedb command. That updates the mlocate database. On Debian you also have dlocate -S and dpkg -L It really is all about accessing files.

Linus himself is pretty bad at system administration. Which is funny. There's a rant he did years ago about trying to run Gnome that is a classic. The guy that wrote Linux has a hard time running Linux.

@mrcrackerist no one should be using a computer just to fix computer problems.

@mrcrackerist I have intractable problems I've no solution for. So they're ongoing issues. Like this message that pops up in syslog every time I run a particular program Sep 12 13:24:02 box1 /usr/lib/WindowMaker/wmaker[2401]: (wGetColorForColormap(resources.c:45)): warning: could not allocate color "#000000"

@LycanEnforcer Gnome hate goes back to the very beginning. Gnome exists because KDE uses QT widgets which are commercially licensed. So Gnome was born out of butthurt. A start like that is never going to go good places. Gnome really was a steaming pile of crap for a long time too. I can remember trying to run Gnome and within moments bug buddy would be popping up.

Mint is Ubuntu with a different default Desktop Environment. There isn't even a reason for Mint to exist today being as Ubuntu gave up on Unity.

Remember kids, running Linux is cheating!

If you're going to run a VM you might as well just run Windows. I mean why go through the extra layer of complexity? If you want to run Windows then just run Windows. Lots of people do it.

@jotix2570 I've seen Windows 10 sit at a blue screen saying do not reboot for long lengths of time. There is nothing remarkable about that system and it is only used for light web browsing.

@zulous to enjoy Linux someone does have to be willing to make an effort now and again. I suppose with enough effort anything can be fixed. Often I cannot justify the work involved. I couldn't get a program to compile the other day and I looked at what the problem was. Looks to me like they just made a mistake. I can't fix it. For some reason they tried to use a private class in their code. I'm not sure why. Not going to try to figure it out either.

You could always just learn how to spell yourself. Needing a spell checker in the first place is a stupid problem itself.

@liesdamnlies3372 is Linus going to be running Linux on old hardware? Or is he going to be running Linux on a $10,000 PC?
1
@liesdamnlies3372 I think Linus' PC cost real money.

@liesdamnlies3372 good to know. I went to Canada once. I didn't like the place. I picked my slice of pizza up, folded it and ate it like any New Yorker would and the natives were horrified! What do those savages know anyways?

@liesdamnlies3372 it was a very long time ago. Was in the French part of Canada too. I hear they're the most unpleasant Canuks.
