The guy obviously lacked structure in his life. Because he always seemed to do better with some. The 70s was a crazy time and he was a product of his times.

Berkowitz was not an animal. He was just a very troubled individual. It is important that we recognize what can drive people to be as he was too.

It is not like he shot anyone with a battle rifle. I'd think a 44 would be more effective though.

@HerrWayne45 you'd think a 44 at point blank range could do the job. But in the dark firing into a car at multiple targets may be harder than it sounds.

He struck fear into the heart of a huge city. So for that I'd say he was quite competent. 40 years on his story still fascinates people too. Will you be able to say the same?

@j.c.7641 The Son of Sam got more famous than most serial killers do. That in itself is quite an accomplishment.

What struck me the most was how often his victims lived. I remember when all of this happened and I just figured people died. At least that's how the media played it. I guess they focused on the attacks? I was in the New York metro area while it was going on and it was such a big deal at the time.

His life certainly would have been enough to drive plenty over the edge.

@nebbymoon I remember hearing about some far out conspiracy theories surrounding the Son of Sam killings. Like somehow it was all a smoke screen to cover up mob hits. Considering how crazy wise guy schemes are it isn't too far fetched really either. No less far fetched than the accepted narrative is at least.
