  3. Let's say you have a 1000 meter fireball, detonating the bomb at 500 m maximizes the damage. You get the best spread. Underground would absorb the energy. Underground testing was quite common back in the test era. Air burst is where it is at to cause damage.

  4. Nuclear weapons have brought the greatest era of peace on Earth that humanity has ever known. Because now it is too risky for the world's superpowers to go to war with each other. So they don't. At least not directly in a total war. Which kept you out of a uniform and off the front line. Unless you wanted to serve. In time gone by not serving was not an option.

On the opening day of the third offensive at Ypres 50,000 British soldiers were cut down before lunchtime. In the following weeks they lost an additional amount to equal nearly a half a million souls. WW1 was called the loss of an entire generation. Poof gone. Nothing that's happened in your life is even remotely close to that. Then in WW2 we killed over 6 times as many as fell in WW1. A mere 20 years later. Fortunately for the world half of them were Russians. So at least the losses were localized.

  12. +Clyde Dale perhaps you should become more of a student of progress in general? Personally I think rocket technology has made rapid progress. Goddard launched the first liquid fueled rocket in 1926. 43 years later men were walking on the Moon. That's excellent progress in a lifetime. The Pyramids remained the tallest man made structures on the planet for 17 centuries. That's not the best progress for 37 generations.

  14. Clyde Dale  the US government funds SpaceX. Who do you think are buying their launches? As far as public funding goes the USA is funding more space exploration than the rest of the world put together does. We hold every meaningful performance space record there is. There is no future for humans in space though. That is a fantasy. High energy cosmic radiation would turn your DNA into jello. That's reality. We can survive on this planet because the magnetosphere generated by the Earth's molten metallic core protects us. That is not something we can easily replicate though. Space will belong to the robots we build to exist there. Mechanical life is the future. Our species is just a stepping stone to the next stage of evolution. We're building our replacements.

  17. Being as we have anti ballistic defenses the only thing keeping us away from WW3 is our decency. We could wipe everyone out and there's nothing they can do about it. We don't because we don't want to. I mean what for? There's no profit in doing it really.

  25. Actually they did not send support. The atomic bombings were not well understood at the time. There was a book written about the bombing events and one thing of particular interest was the complete collapse of society that ensued. The concept is called threads today. Everyone is connected by threads and a massive nuclear bombing disconnects everyone from everything.

  30. Doing it faster is why Apollo was so expensive. Also why there's nothing left of the project today. All of the facilities were built with haste with absolutely no thought put into them lasting. They're gone now too. I think the Vehicle Assembly Building and crawler are all that's left now. I just heard that launch Complex 39 has been demolished. I toured the Cape some 30 years ago now and it was all in bad shape then. Today it is just some crumbling concrete in a marsh. You'd never know it is where history was made.

  39.  @yungfruitsalad1401  What nuclear weapon is more powerful than the Tsar Bomba? The B83 is the largest nuke in the US arsenal and its max yield is 2.4% of what the Tsar was detonated at. The Tsar was tamped to 50% of its max. At full yield they could not have dropped it and recovered the pilot.

  40. It depends how close to the epicenter of the blast you are and what kind of protection you have. The bomb in this simulation is a very large one. I do not think any such a weapon exists in anyone's arsenal today. It is about 30 times larger than the biggest nuclear weapon the USA has in stock. So it's basically BS.
