@luism5514 it may all seem like old hat to you but NASA will often plan missions that are technically impossible to accomplish then develop the technology to get it done. Like the James Webb scope. Nothing like it has ever been done before. NASA never seems to land on Mars the same way twice either. It is always it's never been done like this before but we're hopeful it will work. Sometimes I think they employ offspring of Rube Goldberg the methods are so bizarre. Pure science is a waste of money. But someone has to do it just to be sure. One thing the government is good at is coming up with money to waste too.

We never bombed any brown people that did not have it coming to them.

Should we contract for all of our intercontinental ballistic needs too? Can we count on private contractors to launch at the critical time?

I personally witnessed the world record trebuchet pumpkin shot. I think it was 4,022 feet? Yankee Siege was the machine that did it.

@amorembalming It is amazing what 10 tons of rocks will do on the end of a lever arm.

@martinhughes2549 NASA could be more up front about what some of their projects are actually going to cost. But being as they don't have to I guess that's never going to happen. When there are no consequences people tend to behave poorly. What is the James Webb over budget now? 10 times the initial estimate? That is simply unacceptable.

@martinhughes2549 NASA sure did get their estimates wrong. It does not inspire confidence with what else they may get wrong. And just how wrong they can be.
2
@martinhughes2549 NASA is definitely playing people. They know just how much to ask for so they can get in so deep no one can afford to stop the madness. The whole game has been elevated to a fine art. The over a barrel financing committee. That's the real rocket surgery these days. How to bilk the maximum amount of money for your project.

@Vulcano7965 do you have anything constructive to add?
2
@Vulcano7965 no worries there.

@DeeSnow97 just barely scraping by on a meager 9 billion dollars a year must be rough.

It is taking a long time because it is just not a priority to put astronauts into space. That is not something we need to do.

All concerns and interests do need to be addressed. Spaceflight does not happen in a vacuum after all.

@philb5593 if you ask Santa nicely maybe he'll bring you a telescope for Christmas? I'd rather my tax dollars went to more practical things though.

@thundercactus the US government is unlikely to get out of the missile business anytime too soon. I'm not sure how they shuffle the talent around but I'm sure there's flow back and forth between military and civilian applications. NASA may very well be a carrot for the various engineers and scientists that are involved in aerospace. So I doubt we'd give that asset up.

@iceman27406 what's dumb are the Congress people that believe these estimates and appropriate funds for NASA. First things first. Build the wall!
