Germany did not start the Second World War. France, and England did. They both declared war on Germany. Not the other way around. What Germany was doing in Poland was none of either of their business. Technically it was the bastards that drafted the Treaty of Versailles that planted the seeds of WW2. Which is why WW2 ended much differently.

MrRattenstein the only thing the Soviet army was efficient at was dying. More than half of all causalities in World War 2 were suffered by Soviets.

Schmeethe88 yeah the German strategy at the end of WW2 on the ground consisted mainly of how far west could you get before you surrendered.
7
James Parker I'm talking about military losses. The Soviet method of victory was to use soldiers like they're bullets.
6
Miles Upshur Germany did not start the Second World War. Germany never wanted hostilities with the West. The West declared war on Germany. The West had their reasons for doing so. None of those reasons were altruistic either. More like self serving.

The Con Man indeed your analogy is a poor one. So is burdening one party when all are at fault. Or are you saying that none of Germany's enemies caused any damage themselves? They were all a bunch of dirty November back stabbers, when it was Germany that wanted peace! They all wanted to continue the pogrom of destruction. Germany was the one to extend the olive branch of peace, while her army remained undefeated on the battlefield.

dutchrjen you need evidence? You have not heard of the Iron Curtain? I'm done with you.

If we cared about lives we'd have never gone into the war to begin with. Another 100,000 dead was nothing that was going to dissuade us from another campaign. In hindsight we did the wrong thing. It is as simple as that. But at the time the Allies did not completely understand the Soviet threat.
2
Smurfich Estronchen Harrs I do not know where you get your history from, but I am telling you right now that you are wrong. Only two armies tried to race to Berlin, and they were both Soviet. The western Allies never advanced towards Berlin. They went south, into Bavaria. Because Berlin was in the Soviet zone of occupation. All of that was decided in Yalta before the war was even over. So why would western powers bleed, and die for land they had to just up and get out of? You must think Ike was as stupid as you are.

CivilAviation1 A perspective that historical events back up. Although not the history everyone "knows".
1
dutchrjen The reason why we did things differently at the end of WW2 was because if we didn't the communists would have had influence in those countries. So it took a substantial threat to force us to do the right thing.

Smurfich Estronchen Harrs Market Garden was A Bridge too far.
1
Smurfich Estronchen Harrs We agreed to let the USSR capture Berlin at the Yalta Conference. That is why US forces pushed south into Bavaria. We could have gotten to Berlin much faster than they did. Eisenhower decided to let the USSR have the prize, and reduce western Allied losses though. Because Berlin was deep in the Soviet occupied zone. So after the war was over we'd have had to pull back anyways. They were all idiots. We should have pushed right to Moscow. But who knew?
1
Kognak No one ordered Eisenhower. He was the Supreme Allied Commander. He simply chose to let the Soviets take Berlin. Eisenhower was known as a diplomat. Hey, we won, so he must have been the right choice. What we should have done was to broker a separate peace with Germany, then ally with them to crush the USSR. But who knew? Other than Churchill. The Americans at the time certainly were without a a clue.
1
Smurfich Estronchen Harrs German troops were happy to surrender to British, or American forces. They fought Soviets to the death though.

Princeofcups Poc large != strong Fully half of all people that died in WW2 were Russian
1
Smurfich Estronchen Harrs There was no race. It was decided months in advance what we would not go to Berlin. Why would we fight Russia's battles for it? That is why Ike was the Supreme Allied commander and if you were there they wouldn't have even given you a knife to peel potatoes with!
1
Smurfich Estronchen Harrs Fucked our chances? We did win, you know? Rarely do things happen when we hope they will either. Market Garden did secure 5 out of 6 objectives too. So I would not call that a failure by any means. If two out of three ain't bad, then five out of six is great!
1
Smurfich Estronchen Harrs I should also add that the German counterattack known as the Battle of the Bulge shortened the war by expending resources the Germans did not have. Your grasp of history is rather poor.

***** by your comments I can see that you don't understand US armored doctrine. Shermans were infantry support vehicles. When we wanted to bust tanks we sent out tank destroyers, or just took them out with P-47s firing HVAR rockets.
1
Smurfich Estronchen Harrs 5 out of 6 objectives is a lot more success than failure. The Germans attacking in the Ardennes shortened the war by months. You must think the Germans had unlimited resources and could afford to lose all their equipment like they did. Vietnam was a victory for us. It proved a point that eludes you though. Fortunately it was not lost on those that matter. You're playing checkers at chess tournament.
