i wanted to go to college to be a shop teacher, industrial arts , i figured i'd get to use the tools after work and have summer off and fun job , but the pay for that much college didn't match and so i wanted to be a blacksmith but people laughed and said that's a hobby , so i was Machinist but got laid off and there were only 2 machine shops and the other not hiring , that shop made the heart of the stinger missile and the job eneded where i was...so 20 years later after many jobs , trades i went to machine shop and my first boss was running it like 20 years older though , and he showed me the shop was lasers, and water cutting , so milling, lathe even some the CNC was all obsolete he explained....so some years later i paid for a Blacksmithing session and it was awesome and the guy still making a living ....i explained it to him and he laughed said there will always be blacksmiths but they used to try to make smoothest edges to look like machined metal and i was pounding marks on purpose to look forged and that made him laugh too , he explained people want it to look hand forged too(nowadays) , the main thing i wanted to learn was punching holes in hot metal to save drill bits when i drill high carbon, he showed me that one but he liked mild steel the buttery easy stuff that doesn't damage your anvil and tools as fast..../ranting edit: they don't have shop class anymore either
