JCPenney has most of their stores at malls, but now that is a disadvantage as people don't go to malls like they used to and many malls are struggling/dying

JCPenney never recovered from Ron Johnson. You don't sell clothes and other household items they way you sell electronics. That was a big mistake at JCPenney - getting rid of coupons and discounts which Kohl's still does

What happened? Eddie Lambert happened. He was only interested in the real estate side of Kmart & Sears, not the retailer or it's employees and customers. Two wrongs don't make a right, so putting 2 failing retailers together won't make them better.

My childhood Kmart closed in 2014. Often, in the last few years, they only had 1 or 2 cashiers open, so you had to wait in line. Also, they still used old cash registers from the late '90s/early 2000s. After Kmart bought Sears, they never updated their stores or the technology. While Walmart & Target remodeled and introduced self checkout, Kmart did not. Some stores begin too look run down and the ceiling leaks were never repaired.

Only time will tell if Simon & Brookfield can save JCPenney from going to the grave like Sears has

Sephora left JCPenney and moved to Kohl's

By the year 2000, Kmart fell behind Walmart as the top retailer. After Kmart bought Sears, they never updated their stores or the technology. While Walmart & Target remodeled and introduced self checkout, Kmart did not. Some stores begin too look run down and the ceiling leaks were never repaired.

The Kmart at 7:38 is my childhood Kmart in Dale City, VA. It opened in 1980 and closed in 2014. It would have been 40 years old in 2020.

In the early 1900's, Sears was the Amazon of its day

@SoniaGarcia-kn2jp I mean they stopped offering JCPenney coupons.

@tman4915 Yes, Eddie ruined Kmart & Sears. All he cared about is the real estate

The big mistake was Kmart buying Sears which becoming Sears Holdings. After that, both retailers continued to decline. They didn't update their stores like Walmart & Target did and failed to get into eCommerce (Online shopping). Eddie Lambert was only interested in the real estate
