Most of the comments on here are framing the issue as very black and white, but yours is the first that admits it's a very nuanced issue. I agree that it does require debate, specifically on the best way to keep sports fair while also giving trans people rights. Cenk is being too much of a campaign strategist here & simply looking at polling, when there is a bigger picture (for instance the Republicans aren't doing themselves any favors by overreaching & seeming creepy). I get the sense we're reaching a singularity sooner or later for how much the public can actually stomach this worsening transphobia that's bordering into outright sexism against ciswomen. Part of me wants to see that happen so the Republicans just look even "weirder" and creepy to average voters, but I also worry at what culture and society are doing towards your average trans person by constantly demonizing them every single day. Cenk is right on one part, that the trans athletes debate isn't doing any favors for your average transgender person. You see and hear people belittling and demonizing trans people every day, not even just on the internet anymore. I get the sense trans people will continue to be isolated & humiliated worse and worse as the public gets even crazier on this issue. I just can't imagine most trans people want this and just want to be left alone. It's not the same thing at all, but as someone who lives in Portland, I remember when Trump was demonizing citizens of Portland all the time while he was president, I remember I just wanted him to get the city's name out of his mouth, as friends and family would call me and tell me to move away all the time since they had a predisposition to hate the city without ever even stepping foot in it. It's gotta be maddening as a trans person.

@QuicksilverSG His argument is whether it's hurtful or helpful towards electoral politics, and I think it's a fair debate to have given the unpopular polling towards trans women in sports. At the same time, we shouldn't lose sight that it's the moral position to take even IF it is or isn't smart electorally.

I don't think Cenk is necessarily wrong about the polling, but Sam's argument makes a lot more sense given what's been happening recently. People will think Republicans are weird and creepy for overreaching with trans athletes than anyone will actually care enough in electoral politics to go to the polls to vote against giving trans people rights. On the other hand though, trans men and women have suffered enough from modern politics. I think most trans non-athletes just want to be left alone & not demonized, and fighting for trans women in sports definitely doesn't help popular sentiment towards them. It's a complicated issue & I feel like Cenk AND Francesca get it wrong by just acting like the issue is black and white.

I think his argument was to focus on basic rights for trans ppl, while trying to avoid the objectively unpopular position regarding trans athletes. I tend to agree with Sam that despite it's unpopularity, there's no evidence to show it hurts Dems electorally, and even moreso, it makes Republicans look creepy by overreaching. However, I will say I agree with Cenk that the trans in sports debate isn't doing average trans persons any favors. It's only causing further demonizing of an already isolated minority, especially for trans men or women who are not passable. My heart goes out to these trans people who feel thoroughly attacked by society - in some ways, they're demonized & humiliated by culture worse than black people before the Civil Rights Movement (though obviously in overall less danger). I would tend to agree with him that the trans athletes debate has made it more unsafe to be a trans person in society, but that still doesn't mean you should concede, it just means the issue is not black and white.

I don't think it's profit. I think Cenk and the people at TYT are just far too online and missing the forest for the trees. It doesn't help that they get attacked by the Right nonstop, so a lot of that nonsense leaks into their commentary & they end up shadow boxing with positions that are only taken by hyper-partisan far-right trolls, when they should be ignoring a lot of it.
