UBI is the government subsidizing itself to give citizens an allowance, it does nothing to revise the tax code or fix the gross levels of income inequality we have in this country. It is a band aid to a much larger embedded problem in this country. Neoliberals like Milton Friedman, who was an economic adviser to Ronald Reagan, pushed for it for decades with the ultimate goal of removing administration costs, Not specifically to help the poor. Saying point-blank that "Yang's policies are better than Bernie's" is pretty naive considering Yang's would not address income equality in comparison to Bernie's which directly addresses it. Not to mention Yang is polling at 1%, while Bernie is tied for first with Biden. If progressives realistically want to win in 2020, a smart person would go with Bernie.

There's a reason why tech billionaires have been supporting the idea of UBI in a somewhat malicious way, because they know it will only help to keep class inequality and the status quo the way it is now. I'm not saying Yang is doing this for the same reasons, but, at the same time, it seems like Yang's UBI relies more on slashing social programs than it does on issues that would actually lessen income inequality.

@boatymcboatface5476 The VAT would only pay for a portion of UBI and it is the hardest thing to pass out of everything. If Yang realistically tried to implement UBI, the Value Tax would be the first thing Yang would compromise on most likely (depending on how bad he wanted to pass UBI), while the slashing of social programs would be the easiest thing to get through considering the Republicans have been trying to remove social programs and slash Social Security for decades. I don't understand why you wouldn't just do a Value Tax itself and not risk the Republican Party hijacking a UBI bill that could potentially make things worse if it didn't have VAT in it. Without the Value Tax (and without Medicare for All) UBI is basically just a neoliberal and right-wing wet dream where they can subsidize the entire social safety net (or what's left of it) and give everyone an allowance in its place, which doesn't actually serve as a viable alternative for people. It reminds me of the tax credits that Trump just tried to pass in Trumpcare. What happens when you run out of your monthly allotment from the government and there is nothing left to help you?

Tulsi is polling at 1% and Bernie is at 30%, saying "Sanders is a foil to Tulsi" makes next to no sense. The only way that sentence works is if you say either Tulsi or Yang (the people polling at 1%) are a foil to Bernie's bid considering he's the one that would win right now. Only people I would consider foils are Kamala, Beto and the like who are spouting policy they don't actually believe and would instantly pivot on if given the chance.
