In my opinion, this is the only right way to do this. Creating a public government owned social media site is the only right way to give the government control of social media. The left-wing idea of "converting social media websites into public utilities" is absurd and borderline authoritarian. If the public craves a social media site where only the government dictates free speech, then they will flock to a government owned social media site, but I very much doubt the US government will ever make a decent social media platform. Most software developers are fully aware the government absolutely sucks at developing tech and websites, and on top of that, I doubt the idea of a government-owned social media site is comforting to anyone once it's been implementing and becomes reality. The government does too many things wrong for the public to ever trust it with their personal data and to freely express themselves on a government-owned platform. I just don't see it ever happening in the US, perhaps Britain can pull it off.

Actually that's just objectively untrue. If you're referring to physical fiber optics, it was actually primarily private companies that heavily invested in it and many of those companies went bankrupt due to the Internet bubble, but the infrastructure remained to be used by future corporations. The Internet was built by everyone though, it was a combined effort just as it's used by both private and public entities now. That's besides the point though. Seizing and converting private companies into government-owned utilities is authoritarian by nature. If you want to increase competition and lessen the power of these private companies, you need to break them up to allow smaller competitors to contend with them and stop them from having a firm hold on the entire industry. Seizing entire companies is a far more slippery slope than just a few people getting banned from Twitter, especially when you have an authoritarian president running the government like Donald Trump.

+rbu83145 - Well yeah, that's originally what I was saying was the "right way" to contend with social media giants, so yeah I agree. The idea I mentioned of 'seizing and converting private companies into government-owned utilities' is in reference to what many people on the left have been saying about this whole issue with people getting banned on Twitter and Alex Jones getting banned from several platforms. Specifically, I have been seeing Kyle Kulinski constantly suggesting "we need to convert these companies into public utilities" and many people have been doubling down on it as if it's a great idea for the Trump and GOP-owned government to go around and start seizing companies. Even if it was the Democrats that owned all branches of government, it would still be a steep slippery slope to go down to allow the government to start seizing private companies. I say this as someone who believes in Social Democracy and borderline Democratic Socialism. I find it crazy that so many people on the left think it's a good idea, when a much more clear solution is to just regulate these companies far more, increase their taxes, and break up large companies that have gone through over a dozen mergers to get to their current size.

The internet is not the same thing as a website or online business.
