  4. It's really ironic that they spent this entire interview doing the exact opposite of talking about MLK and his legacy. Instead they just defended a giant penis statue & pointed the finger at all the people who have 2 eyes.

  7. Normally I would have more sympathy, but it's not supposed to be about the artist and his feelings, it's supposed to be about MLK and his legacy (on MLK day no less)

  10. This guy is arguing that the people of Boston told him to do this statue therefore the design is not his fault, but it's pretty obvious that no one voted for MLK and his wife to not have heads and that's literally THE MAIN ISSUE with it.

  12.  @masumi1990x  Idk about woke people, but liberals specifically definitely do even if they won't admit it, or at least they try to white wash the actual class struggles and worker justice that MLK fought for in his later years after the Civil Rights era. I mean, just look at this panel, here all these people defending a weirdly pornographic statue and discussing cultural BS instead of talking about what MLK actually stood for. They're making it all about the artist and MLK is just a footnote in the conversation

  13.  @leagarner3675  I don't know why you're trying so hard to talk up a sculpture that's seen as either weird or weirdly pornographic by 9 out of 10 people that see it for the first time. The thing is a stain on MLK's name just from the pornographic visualization alone. Some of us hold MLK and his wife in higher esteem than a dumb weird statue and just want to ensure his legacy is done justice, because the things MLK stood for is far more important than any one person.

  14. Yep. I'm all for abstract art when it's appropriate, but this was supposed to be a historical monument that captured a moment. It would be like if the Lincoln Memorial turned out to be just Lincoln's feet and knees in the statue

  20.  @leagarner3675  Even more of a reason to remove/change the statue (ffs just give it heads), it's now distracting from all the other MLK memorials and likely going to be the most famous one for all the heaps of controversy piled on top of it. Like I said, MLK deserves better, you'd think this was a joke by some KKK member if you didn't already know who the artist was

  23. @Winston Smith I was obviously overexaggerating, but it is also a half-truth at the same time, since the US spares little federal expense for the arts and libraries, not compared to other first world countries. Most of the money that props up public libraries and museums is local or state funding. The federal gov't only ever has time to increase their budget for war and the pentagon.

  24.  @michigangirl5072  I do have a better idea for an MLK memorial. Just add heads on the thing, problem fixed. No need to even tear it down. Also, it shouldn't be about HIM when he's doing it for an MLK Jr. memorial literally on MLK day. I would have more sympathy if it was an original piece that wasn't meant to honor someone, but the fact that his art elicits pornographic images from MULTIPLE different angles, that's just a stain on MLK Jr. & his legacy, and additionally this whole thing is detracting from actually talking about MLK Jr. and what he believed, his policies, his politics and instead we're talking about this bullshit on a day that's supposed to be meant to reflect on MLK on what he believed - it's honestly the worst thing about this and if they want to fix it, just add heads to the statue and be done with it otherwise this crap will just keep on repeating until they do.
