  1. AMD, Thanks for the very detailed tour of the new Corolla Cross and what a difference a hoist makes! My New Year's wish is that people wait for the Hybrid. With the WEIGHT and PRICE of a basic Camry, I think Toyota should have given the Cross the Camry's 2.5 engine for purely practical performance and economy. In the Cross it seems the 2.0 works really hard pulling around over 300 lbs more than it does in the Corolla hatch. Hopefully the Hybrid powertrain perks things up as it does for the Cross's rich cousin the Lexus UX. AMD, we will have to agree to respectfully disagree on the Torture Beam Rear Suspension in the FWD models ;-)

  4.  @MichaelThomas-nv9rd  There are three little dots beside your comment that will allow you to edit it. Used cars are so expensive right now you would probably be better off placing an order for a new RAV4 Hybrid. By the time it arrives, the snow will be gone.

  5.  @DJTronuk  I am the same height as you. My old Matrix/Vibe leaves me with at least 2-3 spare inches of headroom but I literally cannot fit inside today's Corolla hatch or sedan. The interiors of new TNGA cars have shrunk so much from earlier generations. Have you noticed people getting smaller because I have not?

  7. The Cross will burn 15-25% more fuel than the Corolla Station Wagon. Europeans should be petitioning Toyota to bring the eAWD Corolla Touring Sports Hybrid to your market. It has been on sale in Japan for 2 years.

  9. You are living the V6 RAV4 dream. I don't know why they stopped making them as it seems to me an AWD CUV with raised suspension needs a V6 more than a FWD Camry.

  10.  @LimitGTX  Turbo is a dirty word in my vocabulary and going fast is really not a priority either. The Camry's 2.5 engine would probably yield better fuel economy as it would not work as hard. MPG tests with the new Cross have been on par with the larger and more powerful RAV4 while acceleration is among the worst in class. The towing capacity of the Cross would certainly be upgraded as well with a more suitable powertrain. If it was up to me, the Corolla Cross would have come to this market as an all-Hybrid model like the new Venza and Sienna. The 2.5, 219 hp, AWD powertrain from our RAV4 Hybrid would be perfect.

  11. Your genuine Toyota Yaris is a very fine car but have you considered a made in Ontario RAV4 Hybrid? I will bet you a loonie it gets virtually the same fuel mileage as the upcoming Hybrid Corolla Cross.

  12. We don't have the AWD Hybrid Cross in this market at this time but the Lexus UX AWD Hybrid will probably share its drivetrain because it is built on the exact same platform.

  15.  @MrGomjabber  Remembering myself as a 16 year old driving our Plymouth Duster with a 95 hp Slant Six engine, I would say a 269 hp RAV4 is way, WAY too powerful for a 16 year old. Let the wise parent drive the RAV4 and get the teen a nice, slow, second hand 4 cylinder Corolla or Yaris.

  18. Toyota has been losing sales to competitors who sell CUVs in this category and they want the money in their bank account. The C-HR has not been a big sales success so Toyota has come to market with a more practical model. I am not aware that Toyota builds a Camry wagon today but I would like to see their Corolla wagon on sale as an option for people who don't want a CUV but need something more practical than a sedan or hatch.

  19.  @ka1133  Last summer my neighbour wrote off (without injuries) her 2010 4 cylinder RAV4. I implored her to get a Hybrid to replace it and she got one of the two RAV4 Hybrids sitting on a dealer lot in Ontario at the time. She is thrilled with it so far and has cut her gas bill in half. As a matter of fact, she got more thrilled with her purchase with each jump in the price of gas. I expect the current waiting time for a RAV4 Hybrid order is 3-4 months. If you place your order this week it may arrive by Easter or Victoria Day. Spring time would also be the perfect seller's market for your RV. Happy hunting!

  22. Toyota's competitors are already making billions of dollars selling CUVs in this size category and Toyota wants their own big slice of the profit pie. Expect the smaller Yaris Cross within a year to compete with the tiny ones.

  25.  @FuryanZ  I am rather tall myself so I am very sensitive to the interior dimensions of new cars as they arrive in the market. Some cars come with a back seat that slides back and forth which really helps adapt the interior for a wide range of passengers. Sadly, this feature comes and goes. I fear the UX will be too small for your needs . If you are looking at the NX please carefully compare passenger and cargo room with the RAV4. Many times style and luxury comes at the expense of function. Good luck in your search. :-)

  26.  @FuryanZ  Yes, the Corolla is not the ideal car for tall people. You may wish to carefully compare the rear seat space of the Corolla Cross with the RAV4 . Toyota has provided more cargo room than some similarly sized vehicles but this comes at the expense of rear seat passenger room. I doubt an adult passenger will fit behind a driver of your size in the Corolla Cross. Finally, the Corolla Cross is almost identical in interior dimensions to the Lexus UX which is built on the same platform with the same wheelbase. Since the Lexus UX is already on sale in Europe, it will serve as an excellent template to assess the suitability of the Cross. :-)

  27.  @hawkwood6405  If the Cross is actually cheaper to buy than a comparable RAV4, then she can certainly save money up front. The gas mileage difference between the two is pretty insignificant as the 2.0 engine is working much harder to move the Cross than the 2.5 works to move the RAV4. The RAV4 Hybrid will be much more fuel efficient as will the Cross Hybrid when it comes out later this year. Happy trails!

  28. Why wait for the Corolla Cross when you can already buy a made in Derbyshire Corolla Touring Sports Hybrid that will deliver 10-15 more miles per gallon than the Cross? You can even save a few quid with the Suzuki Swace which is a Corolla TS in disguise.

  31.  @timelineg1  After 41 years of driving I have 4 key words for having a long lifespan and low repair bills for a car in Canada - Toyota, Krown, Amsoil and Michelin. Start with a car made by Toyota. Take it to Krown Rustproofing every year. Use Amsoil's top specification engine oil. Drive on Michelin tires. Happy trails!

  33. The head room in this Cross is much more generous than a regular Corolla but rear seat legroom is still an issue. Too bad they don't offer a sliding rear seat to provide flexibility to occupants of different sizes.

  34. I expect we will start seeing the Hybrid within a few months. It was a shock Toyota did not have it ready for the launch in our market when Hybrid Crosses have been on sale for a year in other parts of the world.

  43.  @alanf5351  I am in Ontario too. Since your Corolla is running fine, you have the option to exercise a lot of patience. Here is a thought, if you place an order today for the one you want you would have your car by Easter or Victoria Day when all the salt is off the roads. BTW I would get a made in Ontario RAV4 Hybrid. Gas at $1.40 per litre makes this choice very obvious to me.

  47.  @tardeliesmagic  Thanks for the clarification, here in Canada our Yaris came with a 1.5 engine. The best cars here for fuel economy are probably the Prius or Corolla Hybrid which can be expected to deliver 70+ miles to the Imperial gallon.

  49. This practical Cross will easily outsell the fashion-forward C-HR with which it shares a platform. The C-HR is a big seller in Europe where it competes with freakish French and Italian models but sales in the US and Canada have been sluggish by Toyota standards. Toyota's odd decision not to offer AWD or Hybrid in the C-HR in our market must also be a contributing factor.

  50. Yes, people who want a CUV should be able to get their Corolla Cross but people who want a car should have the full choice of Corolla sedan, hatch and wagon. If nothing else, the wagon would be 15-20% more fuel efficient than the Cross.

  54.  @robertjamesss  Yes, The Vibe was made on a Corolla assembly line in California and the Matrix was made on a Corolla assembly line in Ontario. Stick to the basic 1.8 Corolla engine because the 2.4 Camry engine found in some 'performance' models is prone to burning oil when it gets older. AMD has a recent video about minor problems with second generation models built after 2009. On the Corolla engines these are all relatively minor issues that would be spotted with a pre-purchase inspection. Happy hunting!

  56. 10 years ago they had the Matrix and Scion xB fulfilling the same function. The C-HR style was too radically styled for most mainstream buyers and Toyota never bothered to bring the AWD or Hybrid models to this market which may well have increased its popularity. Now we will never know.....

  61.  @tundras4ever552  Another reason this Cross will sell is because Toyota's current Corolla is too small for some past buyers. Today's Corolla hatch is like a Matrix built to 7/8 scale. I comfortably drive a Matrix/Vibe and I literally do not fit in the current Corolla which makes the Cross a practical alternative.

  63. Good question, here is an attempt at an answer. Toyota's competitors are selling billions of dollars worth of subcompact CUVs and the C-HR has been a sales dud in that category in North America. It seems Toyota likes money as much as the other automakers so they have decided to bring a more competitive product to market with a very popular model name. I will wager Toyota will sell them faster than they can make them in 2022.
