  1. AMD, This one was an epic. I am very sorry to hear your local #Amsoil dealers are giving you a hard time. I buy directly from Amsoil HQ. They provide excellent service and a healthy discount with my Preferred Customer status. Too bad you are so far away, I wish you could personally examine my 1ZZ-FE engine that has been running on Amsoil Signature Series oil for 17 years. The 'Severe Service' interval with the oil I use is 1 year or 15,000 miles for non-turbo engines like mine. My yearly driving is well within that range. This may sound like finger nails on a chalk board but I have been doing once - a -year oil changes with Signature Series oil and Amsoil long life oil filters for the last 12 years and the engine still purrs like a kitten. As you said so wisely, time is money and I have saved both with top spec Amsoil. Having said all that, if I used a mid-quality, off the shelf synthetic oil and ordinary oil filter, I would change it every 6 months or 5,000 miles. 😁😁😁😁

  2.  @starwarsfanforever7949  I also drive a Vibe. It is not a case of every 2.4 engine burning oil but on average they suffer far more problems than most Toyota motors. Many people have done the proper maintenance and still suffer from excess oil consumption. To compound the problem, Toyota made only a half-hearted attempt to remedy the issue with a hit and miss repair policy. A scan through the video archive will reveal AMD's observations on the 2.4.

  6. I have been using Amsoil's Signature Series for the 17 years I have owned my Toyota engine and it runs as well as the day it left the factory. I would not trust anything else.

  8.  @GrinDiesel1969  No, the EA filter for my car is rated for 15,000 miles so it stays on for a year. Some EA filters are rated up to 25,000 miles so check the specific application for your engine. On the subject of 'bravery' let me share a few experiences. I started driving in 1980. In those days I used old fashioned oil and filters and diligently changed them every 3 months/3,000 miles. We changed spark plugs, distributor cap etc every 12,000 miles or once a year. The coolant was changed once a year and the thermostat was swapped spring and fall. Now iridium spark plugs last 10 years/120,000 miles. There are no distributor caps or rotors. Toyota coolant is good for five years/60,000 miles. Our cars run fine with all season thermostats that stay in place for a decade or more. We accept and trust all these advancements so why would I not trust the most advanced oil on the market to do what it says it does? BTW I have also saved plenty of money and time by eliminating extra oil changes. The big problem with oil across the US and Canada is that regulations are too slack. This allows many inferior oils to be labeled and sold as 'synthetic'. Amsoil Signature Series is a true, polymer based synthetic not a fancy mineral oil like many others. This inconsistency in labeling causes a hell of a lot of confusion about how long oil can last. We also have the makers of inferior synthetic oil encouraging confusion for their own benefit. Two good introductions to oil standards are the Oil Championship videos done by Project Farm and the videos done by the Banks Power channel at Amsoil HQ. BTW I also use Amsoil for my manual transmission. It stays in for 5 years and comes out the same golden color it went in.

  9.  @GrinDiesel1969  Please allow me one more quick story. After 20 years of those 3 month oil changes, I decided to experiment with Synthetic oil in my old Dodge with a Slant 6 engine. It was unbelievable how much more quiet and smooth it ran as the engine started after my first synthetic oil change. For several years I used common, off the shelf synthetics and continued with several oil changes per year. Finally I heard about PAO or Polymer based true synthetic oil and its incredible abilities. By that time I was driving an old Mercury Tracer which was really a Mazda 323 in disguise. It had a 1.6 engine with 85 hp and 4 on the floor transmission. I finally built up the courage to pay full retail price for 4 quarts of Amsoil. Though I had already been running the Tracer with synthetic, the change to Amsoil literally felt like my car had a new engine under the hood. To be clear, there was no tune up involved just a simple oil change. The engine was so much quieter and acceleration was unrecognizable as the engine could simply rev more easily with the better lubricant. It was astonishing and exactly the effect I had read about. It took a while to adjust to the fact the oil would last so much longer but over time it became clear the oil could handle it. One last point about extended oil change intervals, even the best engines burn a tiny amount of oil. When you change the oil frequently you never notice the tiny loss of an ounce or two on the dipstick so you start believing your car burns absolutely none. When extending the interval from 3 to 6 months to once a year, there will eventually be a small but noticeable drop in oil level. I top up about a half quart per year. That has been the same for the 12 years I have done the once a year oil changes. If I change back tomorrow to a 3 - 6 month interval, I can go back to 'believing' my car burns NO oil because the oil will always be on or very near the Full mark.😁

  10.  @2112user  Yes, I admire Project Farm and I loved his Oil Championship Series and not just because over-hyped Mobil 1 was so publicly trounced. I found it very gratifying that the oil I have used for 20 years (Amsoil Signature Series) beat them all. BTW I belong to Amsoil's Preferred Customer program so I get a substantial discount. 😁 After all these years, should I ever feel the desire to switch back to 5K /6 month intervals, I will seriously consider the silver medalist. 😉

  11. AMD discusses the 2.4 engine in detail in several videos. Sadly, it is one of the very few Toyota engines which commonly suffered oil consumption problems even with the best care.

  12. I rented a 1987 Toyota Nova while on vacation on the west coast. It was the first time I had driven a Japanese car and I could not believe how smooth that 1.6 engine was. On the same trip I also drove a Chevette with an engine like a tractor. For many years cars from that joint venture NUMMI plant were not sold in Canada but as soon as the Pontiac Vibe came to market I knew I would be buying one. I got my new Vibe in April 2005. It has had 3 non-scheduled repairs in 17 years and runs as well as the day I brought it home. It hurts me that I cannot buy a new 'GM' car made by Toyota anymore. 😢😭😱

  13. I have used Amsoil Signature Series and for the 17 years I have owned my humble 1.8 Corolla engine. When my 5 year powertrain warranty expired I started to follow Amsoil's 15,000 mile /1 year severe service interval with their EA filter and the engine is as good as new. Despite his best intentions, the Camry owner was using a second or third rate 'synthetic' oil and very probably a second rate oil filter.

  14. I like the tC. If I was searching for one I would only buy a low miles example owned buy an adult. The gearing in the tC transmission means the engine works a lot harder than it does when it is bolted into a Camry and the mpg suffers as a result. Good luck with your search.

  17. Congratulations on your excellent taste in pickups and SUVs. For my 17 year old 1ZZ-FE engine, I use the best oil on the market in conjunction with a top quality filter and change it once per year. I used the same oil while it was under the initial 5 year factory warranty but naturally followed the owner's manual 'Severe Service' oil change interval. Today it runs as well as the day it left the factory.

My switch to Toyota was at least a decade late but better late than never. The car I have driven since 2005 is called a Pontiac Vibe but it is really a Toyota Matrix in disguise. Even as a 17 year old car, it is far more reliable than anything I ever drove which was designed, engineered and built by the American companies. Again, I simply cannot comprehend the ongoing popularity of demonstrably inferior French, Italian and German brands in the UK and across Europe.

  29. Alternatively, you could have the best of both worlds by simply using a higher quality oil that requires fewer changes than the stuff Toyota uses. I have been doing once a year oil changes for the last 12 years. My 1ZZ-FE engine is as good as new because I use a top quality PAO synthetic not a glorified mineral oil like most of the stuff sold in chain stores.

  39. During the 5 year warranty period I used Amsoil Signature Series for my Corolla engine but followed the specified oil change intervals stated in the warranty . For the last 12 years I have followed Amsoil's severe service interval ie 15,000 miles or once a year. My 2005 engine is as good as new. I am not an Amsoil 'follower', Toyota follower or Michelin follower but I pay attention, do my research and protect my wallet by using the best products on the market.

  55. Our problem is the slack regulations and farcical consumer protection standards which legally allow second rate and obsolete mineral oil to be marketed as 'Synthetic'. Genuine synthetics have a far longer lifespan.
